<p>Hi i have a dilemma. My major for college (software engineering) is completely different from all my volunteer work, and classes i am doing in high school. (i am currently a senior). Does it look bad that my classes and volunteeer work are different and have no connection to my major?</p>
<p>volunteer: 2 summers at a senior citizen home, 1 summer at a hospital
classes: mainly science classes, no major computer classes.
I do know how to code however</p>
<p>Since people don’t “major” in anything in high school, what you study in high school is usually for the most part “prescribed” for you - 3 sciences, 4 maths, 3 social sciences, etc. College is finally the chance to study what YOU want. High school is just to be sure you have the basics - This isn’t like some places in Europe/Asia, where high school is more like college, and you have a career path chosen for you at that point…</p>
<p>Don’t worry, it is totally fine. To some extent I face a similar problem and am super intimidated by those who already have significant experience in the engineering fields I’m considering. But many high schools don’t even offer venues for students to explore interests like software engineering (never heard of that major frankly). Plus, a lot of school supplement apps will ask an essay (especially if you’re applying to be a engineer) about why they choose that major and that school. That would give you a perfect opportunity to explain your interest which your transcript may not reflect.</p>
<p>Honestly, I don’t think there is any problem with that just as long as your EC’s show a trait significative to you they shouldn’t really affect your major choice.</p>
