My National Merit kid is a freshman at Alabama...feel free to ask questions

Because the on-campus meal plan is required now, does the Silver Plan allow for meals at all on campus retail locations? I have spent an hour trying to figure this out at their website?

seriously y’all - good questions – and if i were you, i’d get on facebook on the bama parents groups, and bama national merit parents groups. there are thousands of people just focused on bama there who can help! I will say, my son will be a junior next year. he is rooming off campus in an apartment with two NMF friends who do not in any way want to live on campus for a third year. I think that sentiment is pretty common the older they get! but for details, experiences, and all sorts of thoughts there’s like 14K in the bama parents groups; so so so specifically helpful. good luck!

That would be great if they let you join before your child has committed.

Freshman are guaranteed on-campus. NMF sophomores and other upper class that have housing scholarships could have chosen to live in one of the 200 spaces in East Edge apartments which is off campus (across the street from the edge of campus). Other upper class students with guaranteed housing scholarships should get to live on campus unless the freshman numbers cause the school to rent out more rooms for them in off campus housing. I believe the situation is somewhat fluid but NMFs get housing that is arranged by the school per the terms of their scholarship. Typically it is 4 years.

I have read the Honors scholarships stack with the NMF Scholarship. Is it just for travel and if not is there one for Merit? I realize that the other UA Scholarships do not stack and departmental’s do not stack. But I am told Honors Scholarships do.

They do stack. I asked at Bama Bound and followed up with the scholarship office after we got home. Both confirmed that the Honors College scholarships will stack with the NMF package. However, I think that only upperclassmen are eligible for these scholarships, and the application for next year has not yet opened. My understanding is that the Honors College has several merit-based ones that do not have limitations on how the money can be used. During Bama Bound, they said that they often have more money than applicants so each year they have quite a bit of unclaimed money.

I can also confirm that the Randall Research Fellowship, which I did not even realize was a “thing” until my DD received one, also stacks with the NMF package. Her Fellowship is renewable for all 4 years as long as she remains in the RRS program.

Could you elaborate on the fellowship? I was aware of the program, but not that there were any financial benefits.

To be honest, I don’t really know. Some of last year’s freshmen were awarded fellowships, and there was not a separate application. The fellowships work just like a scholarship and are renewable for as long as the student remains in RRS.

As an FYI, I would not assume that there is a financial benefit to being a part of RRSP. It was just an added (and unexpected) bonus for some students.

Hi everyone! My DS23 was informed he is a NM Finalist a few weeks ago and we are just learning about the UA NMF program. From the CC forums and everything we google, this seems like an amazing opportunity and the students who attend are very happy.

This said, we are feeling late to the game!

Beyond applying (completed this weekend) any tips to help us catch up? (quick bio: wants to study Economics, lots of AP’s and DE courses, likes social groups but probably not into the Greek system, does research with a local uni professor and enjoys it, military brat has been in 10 different locations/schools pk-12 so we think he will be ok moving far away from our current home…we are in NV). Thanks so much for any info, these forums are so helpful.

Congrats to him! I have a freshman there now.

He can apply to the honors college too. Maybe he has to be accepted first. I don’t remember.

Once accepted, he can pay housing and try to find a roommate if he wants. He’s too late to have his choice of rooms except by being pulled in by a roommate. But if he’s in honors, he’ll likely get honors housing regardless.

He can look at Honors Action, which happens in August and gives early move-in to the dorm.

Register for Bama Bound, which is the required orientation over the summer. It opened last month, but we didn’t register until May 1 last year and still had quite a few choices of days.

Thank you! Great info, the Honors housing looks great, and I think he will certainly be interested in moving in early.

I came to this thread specifically to check on this. We’re in the same boat. Our son just enrolled last Friday. His buddy also enrolled. My son is a NMF and they are both accepted to honors program. We have been bummed thinking about not getting into honors dorms since they are so late to register, but you think they could still have a chance?

Yes, based on what we have been told, RCS has plenty of openings for honors kids. I believe my son selects on May 18th. Some of the honors dorms are less desirable. For a lot of the kids, cost is also a consideration.

Honestly, the housing is an overlooked gem in this scholarship. S22 will be in East End nest year (which is nicer than the apartment DW and I had when first married). It is paid for by the University for the year. Housing for the next few years…guaranteed (now…you have to be quick on the on the emails). But, that is pretty sweet.

If he didn’t put a housing deposit down by Feb 1, then I don’t believe he gets a pick date. He will be assigned housing. Good chance it’s going to in honors but no guarantee.

Mine too! I was down there last month and drove through. It’s definitely nice looking and has perks! He’s thrilled it’s so close to the band field. It’ll make game days a little easier.
