My New Favorite Food. What's Yours?

Last night, we had pan roasted fish atop a bed of favas. Yum! What is Favas?
I recently discovered a Greek dish, Favas, made not with fava beans as you might expect, but with yellow split peas. This is the most simple of dishes, but also the most delicious. At the moment, Favas is making a weekly appearance on my dinner table; I’m sure my family will tire of it soon enough, however, in the meantime…yum!

What is your recently discovered new fave? Recipes please!

I’ve discovered that putting cream cheese on a grilled sandwich can yield really good results.

For instance… something to try:

  • Your favorite bread, buttered
  • Swiss, cheddar, or provolone (or a combo…) – put this on the bottom of the sandwich filling
  • Meat in the middle → turkey, pastrami, and/or corned beef
  • Smear of cream cheese on top of the meat
  • Then the other piece of bread

Grill that about 5 minutes per side in a skillet, or until the bread is crispy and golden-brown, the cheese is melted, and the cream cheese is warm and gooey.

Then sauce it up – I like a mixture of mayonnaise and 1000 island. Leave some on the side for dipping if you really love sauce.

ETA: for something healthy, add a layer of sauerkraut or lettuce & tomato.

We’ve recently discovered za’atar seasoning which is making many of our routine foods (salads, dips/sauces, anything grilled) “favorites” again.

Goji berries. I learned that they had a lot of nutrients so tried them out. They are tart, but I like adding them to my Greek yogurt.

This week I’m liking shortbread. I had to bake some for an annual church/Scottish celebration, and they are quite simple. Yummy thanks to the abundance of butter. Sweet but not overly sweet.

I first used Joy of Cooking recipe (1 c butter, 2c sifted flour, 1/2c confectioner’s sugar, 1/4g salt), where I pressed dough into a nonstick 9x9 pan and then poked with fork before baking… so simple.

Then I tried the Betty Crocker recipe (3/4c butter, 1/4c sugar, 2c flour). Instead of rolling out and cutting into shapes, I pressed dough into a glass 8x8 pan and baked.

I am on a low fiber diet this week, in prep for a colonoscopy - glad to have leftover shortbread. It’s nice and crunchy.

My bff lived in Greece for 5 years and just yesterday told me to be on the lookout for this dip. :gift_heart::gift_heart:

Red velvet beet smoothie! Cocoa powder, beet, cherries, yogurt, almond milk, oatmeal ---- I was prepared to hate it, but now I am making excuses to have one

Great thread! I’ll need to give it some thought as the last 2 months have been survival mode in preparation for a house move so “cooking” has been anything that takes 10 mins or less and no new recipes.

I will say I go through bouts of “can’t get enough cottage cheese” - and I’m in one now. Sweet with fruit or jam or honey and nuts. Savory as a sour cream sub or slathered on a bagel with sliced tomatoes and salt and pepper. Great on a baked potato.

It’s so delicious. I went to TJ today, however, they are out of yellow split peas so I’m going to try it tonight with green lentils. I hope it works!

I fell in love with za’tar when we visited my kid the year he was in Jordan. Hard to believe that was 10 years ago now!

Pink peppercorns. Discovered them in this recipe: Braised Sausage and Fennel with Toasted Spices Recipe - Kelsey Youngman
Now I’ve stocked up and am looking for more recipes that include them. Please share if you have any.

The first time I became aware of pink peppercorns, was about 20 years ago when a friend crushed them over buratta (another first at the time). Pink peppercorns, while having a peppery flavor, are not actually pepper! Pink peppercorns are related to some type of nut, so beware for those with nut allergies!

If you like fried rice, we use the poke bowls and toss them in a sauté pan with a bit of sesame oil - yum!
