@MYOS1634 hey there!! Yes, it has been a while! Here we go…
Seahawk Journal - February 5, 2016 (early February): My second semester is already at the end of its first month. What a breeze it’s been.
My classes have started off very well for the most part. I got a 100 on my first French quiz a couple of weeks ago, and got a 96 on my first French test this week. The professor and I get on very well and we tend to talk about soccer after class a lot!! I also completed my first Psychology exam yesterday (would have taken it on Thursday with everyone else but my professor couldn’t accommodate my ET) - confident of a good result in that as well. I’m enjoying learning how to swim in PED, microeconomics is pretty good, QMM is okay. Overall, the semester has started well on all fronts.
I’ve already seen a few people leave. One guy transferred back home to play soccer for UMass Boston (thank goodness it wasn’t the main one ), another transferred to UNC Charlotte (one of my dorm mates will be joining him at the end of the year), a few transferred to community college for money reasons, a New Jerseyan transferred back home to Rutgers due to homesickness, and a few either dropped or failed out. Someone in the Honors College even dropped out. It has me a little bit worried for our retention rate, but I guess that’s just life. Plus, we have a ton of new people who entered as FYSAs this semester - many are in my dorm. Interestingly, several of my French classmates are junior transfers. One transferred from Chapel Hill and another transferred from NC State (which is where a close friend of mine will likely be headed at the end of the year). French and Psych are my two favorite classes so far, honestly.
On the subject of rates, I recently had a look at Quinnipiac’s Fall 2015 stats according to College Board. Last year’s LBad Cup losing finalists apparently saw their acceptance rate increase from 67% to 74%, and their yield decreased from 13% to 11%. Considering that they laid off several professors last year, it seems to me that they might be in a bit of trouble. However, at least they’re not Rider, cup quarterfinalists and QU’s conference rivals, who had to fire professors AND cut more than a dozen majors. Shows that I made the right decision to jump onto a Battleship that can float!! But who knows what would have happened if Captain Nick had scored that penalty instead of hitting the crossbar…
And yet, I still don’t know what the acceptance rate for the current freshman class at my own school is…weird.
Thanks for the update, I am so glad you are happy there, - remind me - did you ever visit Wilmington before you started there?
Do you know why people are transferring to UNC-C? Charlotte does have football now and is more diverse than UNCW, but I just didn’t like the feel. My daughter was embarrassed that people from her HS saw her on the tour.
I have known many kids that transfer out of UNCW, lots of NC kids use Wilmington to get themselves into Chapel Hill and State. Personally, here in Raleigh I feel like Wilmington is slipping in popularity and I don’t really know why. In my day (a few years back ) Wilmington was equal to ECU, known as a party school, but like App they have really pulled themselves up popularity and rankings. I love the size, the location, and the programs they offer.
@ClarinetDad16 this does have me worried about our retention rate, yes. But at the end of the day it should be no less than 84%.
@ITBgirl hey there!! No, I didn’t get to visit Wilmington before I started. I went in totally blind. My friend that is going to UNCC at the end of the year is going there because she’s from that area and she’s homesick. Plus, the nursing program there is far less stringent. Yes, there was a time when UNCW and ECU were equal (probably as recently as 2002), but those days are LONG gone. App State has done very well for themselves also - that’s why I gave both UNCW and App State 4 stars in my rating system. Hope your daughter is liking ECU - if not, she’s always welcome here.
Also, I’m really thinking of joining a fraternity next school year, and also working in admissions and/or being a Seahawk Link for the incoming freshmen (if they’re all possible to do simultaneously). What do y’all think?
You’d be perfect for Seahawk link and a job in admissions would be interesting at least. Fraternities are social groups so if you like the students, why not? Just make sure it doesn’t overwhelm your academics
Hey y’all,
Quick update now that I’m on Spring Break for a week. First, I wanted to say that the application process for becoming a Seahawk Link is going well so far. I have group interviews on the 23rd and individual interviews not long after that. I’m very excited for what’s in store, hope to hear back from that soon!
Second, I’m absolutely in love with the idea of joining a frat next semester. I’m currently between Alpha Sigma Phi (newest frat on campus, just arrived this semester), Lambda Chi Alpha, Alpha Tau Omega and Delta Chi. I’m thinking of rushing at least three of them in the fall to see which one I would like best and pick from; I would hate to have only picked one to rush and be left stranded in the event that frat would decide against extending a bid my way. My roommate and a few others think I would do well in Lambda Chi. Others see me doing well in either of the other three. Either way, it’s a process I’m really looking forward to.
SeaHawk Link is fantastic, congrats on progressing to group interviews. I think you’d be great for it!
Happy basketball games!
Finally, think it through about the fraternity. Ask, directly, what the time commitment is. Ask whoever will give you a truthful answer. But some fraternities may require a lot of time commitment and you don’t want to jeopardize your grades.
Long time since I checked in on LBad (ibad to us old timers!). As soon as I saw the Seahawks were going to face Duke I had to check in on everyone’s favorite CCK (College Confidential Kid). Glad to see you’re doing well! My college freshman (at Penn State) is enjoying him and my HS junior has UNC-W on his prospect list…we’ll see. As I learned here on CC, it’s a long, long (and excruciating slow at times) process!
@MYOS1634 very true. I’ll ask and give you an answer ASAP. I think I’d be a great Seahawk Link as well!!
@brucemag long time, no see!! Thanks for the check-in, glad your first son is loving Penn State!!! Your second son made the right choice by putting UNCW on his prospect list indeed. It is a VERY tedious process, though.
I’ll be back on after today’s big game!!! GO HAWKS!!!
Well, we should be in the Sweet Sixteen now instead of Duke. Still, a great season, and I’m so so proud of our boys and proud to be a Seahawk. It was awesome to see them qualify for the Big Dance in my freshman year, and our performance last Thursday proves that we’re only getting better. Now that we’ve shown that we can hang with the big boys, the REAL Coach K should be able to schedule more non-conference games against tougher opponents next season. I’d love to see them take on Duke again, maybe Carolina, State, Syracuse, Wake Forest, UMiami, Kentucky, UMass…at least three of those teams. Although pretty sure we’d wreck the last one lol!!
And, one correction: the Seahawk Link interview that I’m going for on Wednesday the 23rd is an individual interview. The GROUP interviews don’t begin until later, and only selected applicants will progress to that.
Happy to announce that, as of Friday, I have progressed to the Group Interview phase of the Seahawk Link hiring process! My GI is on Tuesday. Will let you all know how it goes. Hope everyone had a happy Easter!!
I’ve done a lot of thinking over the last few weeks. I’ve come to the unfortunate conclusion that my current school, UNC Wilmington, isn’t the right fit for me after all. I’m more than homesick and I can’t fend for myself nine hours away from home. I thought everything was Gucci, but it’s not. It’s all a lie. I pretend to like it here so the idiots who hated me in high school could get a glimpse of how far I was above them. But truthfully, I’m not. Not by any stretch of the imagination. The girls here are all catty, petty, and fake and the guys are jerks. This place isn’t at all laid-back and I can’t wait to get the hell outta here. Not to mention no one knows that the school even exists lol
I’ve come to announce that I have accepted a transfer offer from UMass Amherst, where I will be competing for their Isenberg school of business. This school has been my dream school since junior year of high school, and I’m so so happy that I finally get to make my dreams a reality. The awesome campus food, the unique college town, etc have been what I’ve craved for most of my life. I’m excited to finally take this school to the next level and help it reach the new heights that it was always destined to reach. I can’t wait to work with coach Subbaswamy. Plus, what better state to attend college in than Massachusetts??
@MYOS1634@carolinamom2boys not to mention that a nemesis of mine actually does go there, so I definitely wouldn’t willingly attend the same school as him regardless of the size…
