My Parents Won't Let Me Take Japanese Class

I'll get straight to my question. Do you have any ideas that I can use to convince my parents to let me take Japanese 101 at Long Beach?

I know that Japanese isn't a common language and is not as "useful" as Spanish is, but I want to take Japanese anyway because I'm interested in Japanese. I already took 4 years of Spanish anyway in middle and high school and I am done for good with Spanish. I also have been taking Vietnamese classes for 6 years because my parents are Vietnamese. I'm ready to move on to another language. I never really enjoyed Spanish in the first place. I'm not expecting to become fluent in Japanese, but I just want to take at least 1 class in college.

I'm planning to tell my parents that I want to take just 1 semester of Japanese and that it will fulfill my GE requirement. Pharmacy schools love foreign languages. I could tell my parents that I want to take the class because I'm interested, but they like solid reasoning and I need that solid reasoning to support myself.

My parents don't want me to take Japanese because they have this strange idea that I want to go marry a Japanese guy >_>. What? I don't even know if I'll ever get married or even have an interest in a guy. They also hate Japanese because of WWII, which is silly because that is nearly a century ago and because nearly all nations have a bad past of being aggressive. They also think that my wanting to take Japanese has to do with my interest in anime, which is partially the truth, but it has slowly turned into more of an interest in the language itself than the media. I've been wanting to take Japanese for over 7 years, but I decided to take Spanish out of practical reasoning, but discovered that I didn't like Spanish and that I never really tried in that class.

Please give me some ideas for what to say! I have thought of some reasons, but I would like to get some new suggestions for my situation.

One pretty decent argument is that you are in college, and an adult and have every right to choose what you will and won’t do no matter who disagrees with you. Remind them they should be happy you’re in college in the first place.

stinks. im taking 101 in the fall

I say go for it. College is a time for you to discover who you are and what your interest are. If Japanese seems to be one of them, then go for it. You’re an adult now. It’s YOUR education, not theirs.
