So I got my results back and was placed into Calculus 1 for math and English 100 basic composition for English. Are these good or bad placements? and can someone tell me the placements of Math and English from worst to best?

google the Rutgers website for this info.

I did google it, apparently there only showed 2 placement english classes but I thought there might be more so I decided to ask here.
I check for math and it took me to things either not related to what I’m looking for or something that does but didn’t clearly explain to me.
Sorry if my post annoyed you in any way :/

The highest math you can place into is Calc 1, so congrats on that. I’m not certain, but I believe the lowest to highest placements are Elementary Algebra, Precalc, and Calc 1. There might also be an Intermediate Algebra placement.

For English, the highest placement is 355:101 Expository Writing. The other placements are 100, 100R, and 100G. If you place into 100, you take Basic Composition and then you take Expos. If you place into 100R or 100G, you have to take Basic Composition in addition to a 1.5 credit workshop course and then you can take Expos. So you got the second highest placement possible for English.

Thanks rhetorical, I was feeling tired.

OP- Actually, I am starting to refer people to google the Rutgers website because that is where I find 95% of the info I give out here.

Another reason I didn’t want to give a specific answer is because there are no really ‘good’ or ‘bad’ placements. Any placement you get should be ‘good’ because it is the one you need to be in, according to the test you just took. Most people are correctly placed, but they do occasionally make an error (maybe the student was having a bad day for some reason when they had to take their placement test).

They will give you a short essay writing assignment in Basic Comp the first day you are there. That will either confirm your placement, or allow them to move you up to Expos. Talk to your professor the first day if you feel you have been placed in the wrong class and they will assess your essay and make a decision.

Rhetorical13- Thank you that really helped me

rualum- Thank you for the extra information :)

hey rualum,

just wondering, is that an in-class essay or a take-home assignment?

It will be done during class time. Basic comp is supposed to prepare you for Expos. so it will be just like Expos, but start at a more basic level.
