Whenever I am asked my race, I always say Latino. But until recently I failed to realize that technically, I am Native American. My family (parents, grandparents, great-grandparents) have always lived in Honduras and therefore we are descendants of Mayans. So essentially, couldnt I claim Native American on my college apps seeing as how my family is native to America? Please dont think that I am trying to find some loophole into college b/c thats not what this is. I just want whatever college I go to to have me classfied correctly.

I think they will classify you as Native American but then again im not forsure..

Colleges know that most Latinos are mixes of various races, including white, black, and in the case of most Central Americans, Native American.

Mark down whatever you most closely identify yourself with.

I recall that the Native American classification is the result of identified tribes in North America - just a thought. I could be wrong but I do recall reading about this a couple of years ago.

But its not fair to say that to be classified as Native American, you must be Native to the coutnry we know to be America. Doesnt it make sense to say that you are Native American b/c you are Native to the Americas. I believe that Tainos are considered Native American so wouldnt Aztec, Mayan, Incan also be considered too

Honduras! omg... catrachos!! lol, my mom's from honduras... and my dad's parents are (hes from ny)... but im not really native american/mayan... i'm more racially spanish.... although i still mestizo-ish... lol.... thats cool though... i always had that question... when i dual enrolled they asked if i was hispanic/latino... and i said yes... then they asked for my race.... i circled both white and native american and wrote down mayan... even though im not even sure that's the actual indian tribe... cause there were so many... but chief lempira was a great chief... so i put mayan... lol...haha...

i always wondered abou them southwest peeps...like the part that was once mexico... hmm....

Maybe this can explain it better...........................

“American Indian and Alaska Native. A person having origins in any of the original peoples of North and South America (including Central America) and who maintain tribal affiliation or community attachment.”

-Here is how the United States government classifies Native American. Unless you have some sort of social ties to a Native American community, you are not Native American.

So it certainly sounds as tho this one applies..........................

Hispanic or Latino.
A person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture of origin, regardless of race. The term "Spanish origin" can be used in addition to "Hispanic or Latino

NO, you are not Native American, you are an indigenous Honduran (or whatever they're called), hence you should put down Latino.
