For schools that would be more match/safe based on your list
If you like Bucknell then look at Gettysburg
If you like Colgate try St Lawrence or Hobart
If you like BC then maybe Fairfield or Villanova
@drusba so you would recommend not sending my scores to GWU?
Thanks so much to everyone for responding! making me feel better about myself haha
@collegebound200 Your SAT score is not the only thing colleges look. Having said that I agree with most of the folks about your odd. So below is my suggestion
- Look for colleges that has test optional - Bates, Colby, Wake Forest, etc
- If you do not need financial aid, do not appy CSS or FAFSA. Colleges will like that (I know it is not fair…but they do). They want rich students with good grades.
- I am confident you will get onto large school. Look for ones with low yield (% of student who actually attend) after they get admitted.
- Create you own hooks - If you are female, look for colleges with high males eg.Most Eng colleges, such as CMU, etc. If you are male look for colleges with high female - most LAC fall in that group.
- If you are minority - Look for colleges that have <5%. you have a better changes of getting in.
Hey @collegebound200 just wanted to chime in with a little solidarity! I was in a very similar boat–my SAT was almost exactly what yours was–and especially as a high achieving student otherwise, it can be such a bummer to feel like you’ve under-performed. But it will be OK! It will put certain schools out of reach, but plenty of others are still possible. I can speak personally to Boston University–they’ll love your academic profile, and they put a heavier emphasis on grades over test scores. Your SAT is well within their range–I was at an admissions meeting recently as an alumni and they confirmed that things haven’t changed much from when I applied–an SAT score like yours will NOT sink your application because you’ve got solid academics/GPA. They like upward trends and course rigor. (and on a personal anecdata side, it may not put you out for aid, either–I got full tuition from BU despite what would be considered my “low” SAT!)
So I’d say focus on making your essays shine and make your overall, holistic package great.
@proudterrier I have been feeling so bummed because I am always trying to perform at my best, and I just can’t believe that 1910 is my best. I also feel like I have wasted my 4 years of HS working so hard for no reason when my one test scores is just going to ruin it all… pretty sad! Thank you for making me feel better!
Should I apply to Skidmore? - any advice would be greatly appreciated
@sreya124 is history easier than other majors? my major for USC is very specific: law, history, and culture and I actually interview with them recently specifically for that major.
Do schools admit by major or do they admit you and then look at your major? Because if not that many people apply to that major and they admit by major, then I’d have a higher chance…
Thanks everyone.
Suck it up son. Confidence is your friend, doubt your enemy. My daughter has a lower SAT than you do, by about 150 points. Accepted to Creighton, U of Arizona, U of Alabama with scholarships to the first two, still waiting on U of Alabama scholarship input. She has great essays, great teacher recommendations, and was CA North Coast Section Scholar Athlete (Varsity softball with GPA higher than 3.8). Ignore that SAT and approach this with oodles of confidence.
@collegebound200 my daughter is in the same boat! She just took the SATs again in Dec and is hoping the 2nd time is better. She’s had a lot of the same thoughts (“I won’t get in anywhere good”, “all this hard work for nothing”, etc.). I try to tell her to have faith and let the chips fall where they may - it will all work out in the end.
As an aside, Skidmore is one of the schools she really likes, and I think your scores are a match, with all of your other attributes above their average. She loved the vibe of the school - I’d definitely recommend taking a look.
Good luck to you and as hard as it is, try not to stress. You’ll get into a great school that will be perfect for you!
@mjrube94 thank you! I wish your daughter luck as well, I know how tough it can be!
bump!
I am not an expert on all of the schools on your list. However, it seems heavy on high match - low reach - reach.
Syracuse and Scranton look like solid matches.
Are any of the Cal States an option for you? (not sure if the deadline has passed)
You might want to look at WUE schools (Western Universities Exchange). You can attend many OOS schools for 1.5x in-state admission. http://wue.wiche.edu/search_results.jsp?searchType=all
UCSB and UCI have great history departments! The Arizona system is also good and the U of A and AZ State are WUE schools.
It looks like you are targeting small to mid-sized universities. Maybe Brandeis might be worth a look?
Search on CC for the thread “where did your 3.3 - 3.6 student get in” for suggestions for safety schools. As your stats are better than that, these would constitute safeties and many of the options offered good merit- and financial-based aid.
I think that your scores are good enough to send. If you don’t send them, admissions may imagine that they are worse than they are!
be sure to run net price calculators for schools to make sure you can afford them. These look decent for match/reach options. be sure to identify some safeties. try looking at Southwestern and Trinity in Texas and maybe Redlands in Cali. Maybe Clark in MA and Wooster in OH. These should be easier to get in than the ones on your list. Pennsylvania has a bunch of schools like this (Gettysburg was mentioned above). Also try to finding a rolling admissions safety to get an admission under your belt. someone recommended the ‘colleges that changed lives’ - good suggestion. just be sure your safe financially as well.
@lz57c4 I think I will look into Gettysburg but I am afraid my SAT score is a bit low for that school. Here are the stats - SAT Reading 25th-75th percentile (enrolled students) 600 - 680, SAT Math 25th-75th percentile (enrolled students) 610 - 680. What do you think?
@mamaedefamilia I have actually applied to both UCSB and UCI but UCSB seems a bit crazy for me and UCI seems not crazy enough! I’ve also looked into Brandeis and I don’t like it too much, it also seems to be a bit hard for me to get into (looking at test scores). I will definitely search the 3.3 - 3.6 for my safeties! Thanks so much! If you have any other suggestions that’d be great
I’ll add Bowdoin as another great school that is test-optional. The 3.8 GPA is maybe a hair below average there, but it’s definitely in the ballpark.
Be sure to knock the essays out of the park, of course. (as with all apps requiring essays)
I’ve also applied to CSU Cal Poly SLO & Pomona, and SDSU. Not sure if I will get into those.
Pomona is highly selective (a reach) but I like your chances at the other two.
@prezbucky really? I always thought SLO was the harder one to get into. Thanks!
Also for Bowdoin you think I should apply and not send my test scores?
Sorry I keep commenting haha but the test scores there are super high so I definitely think sending my scores would hurt me. If I don’t send my scores will they just not be a factor?
