Schools for my SAT??

I’m a rising senior in high school and am having trouble solidifying my college list. I have a good GPA and strong extracurricular activities, as well as a number of leadership and academic awards from my school. However, I’m afraid my SAT score is going to hurt me when I go apply to some selective colleges! I received a 2110 (720 CR. 650 M, 740 WR) and am SUPER nervous that my math score is going to be the thing that disqualifies me from attending a top- tier school and that all of my hard work will be for nothing. I plan on being an English major, and although I’m in accelerated math classes it’s not a passion nor strength of mine.

Thoughts? Schools? Thanks!!

Don’t worry. That is a great score.

Oh my god a 2110! That’s horrible! You may be rejected from your local community college with that awful score. But for real that’s a average score for top colleges so don’t worry.

Have you looked for the schools you will like to apply?
I suggest you that if this is your first time, then take it again.

If you are aiming for the Ivies or Ivy equivalents then it is not a good score. Otherwise it is fine.

@pianogirl999

Give us a profile, location, GPA, ethnicity…

You’re not “putting your hard work to waste” if you don’t attend a top-20 school.

@patriot420 I know that, and I would be fine with attending my state school or an equivalent (because they’re great schools that offer amazing opportunities), but I just want to make sure that I at least have a chance at some of my reaches. Thanks for commenting!! :slight_smile:

You could always “find” reaches by focusing only on the two dozen or so schools at which your scores would be (somewhat) below average. But excepting that inclination, your scores do qualify you for a “top” college.

Your math score is fine. Your SAT is low for Ivies although I don’t know what your GPA is. If you provide more criteria about what you would like in a school and what states you are comfortable with, we can help a little more.

@BatesParents2019 @TheDidactic my GPA is a 3.99 unweighted, 4.11/4.3 weighted

It never hurts to retake the SAT again and see if you can get higher. 2200+ will put you at a very comfortable position and will probably get nice merit at small schools and state schools.

–Home state?
–Can you cover your Expected Family Contribution?
–Can you provide a few campus/culture preferences?
–What schools are on your current list?

^^
Answer the above questions, please. :slight_smile:

since schools mostly only use the M+CR, and yours is a 1370, you may find that you’ll score higher on the ACT, so take that.

While a 1370 M+CR is good, it’s not very competitive for top schools. It’s the equivalent of an ACT 31. But, I think that if you took the actual ACT, you might get higher than a 31.

@Dunboyne @mom2collegekids

Home state = VT
Family contributions = not a problem
I would love to be in or near a city-- my dream schools are Georgetown and Harvard

You need to retake to be competitive for G’Town and Harvard.
However, if you can get 1400 CR+M, you can get into some nice Honors Colleges.
Brandeis or Northeastern would be options, as would URochester or NYU, Fordham, UMaryland CP (metroride away from DC), UMinnesota Twin Cities, Macalester, DePaul, Lake Forest, Agnes Scott, Emory, Vanderbilt, Rhodes. All of these are in cities and have varying degrees of selectivity.
In Vermont, UVT and St Michael’s are obvious safeties for you. You need to build from the ground up, so add to those two.
If money is no problem (and do check with your parents because unless you’ve checked you may be assuming something that isn’t accurate for whaver reason) Penn State Schreyer may be possible (they don’t care about your test scores but do care about essays and course rigor.)
Pitt or Temple would have nice merit as would UMass Amherst (with Amherst a nice college town and the five-college consortium).

Echoing many of those above: Barnard, Boston U, UCLA, Johns Hopkins, U Maryland, U Minnesota, Northeastern, U Rochester, Temple, Vanderbilt, U Vermont, U Washington.
