My school only offers a couple AP classes..?

I found this website and I thought "I have to join!" This is my first post--kinda exciting. Ha. ANYWAY.

I attend a public, under-funded high school that only offers 6 AP classes, of which only Juniors and Seniors can enroll in. Junior year I took APUSH and AP Lang/Comp. This year I'm taking AP Gov, AP Lit, and AP Spanish. As I was reading through other threads and I saw students taking 6 AP classes in just one year! Will this hinder my chances at getting into colleges since I'm not as competitive as other applicants?

My school had no AP classes. I got into a top three and MIT, among others. They will look at you in context of your opportunity.

Ptontiger16 did you self study any?

ptontiger16-
Oh, okay, thanks! That makes me feel a lot better.

Yes, I self-studied AP Chem and received a 5, but I had had two years of regular chemistry w/ labs.

@michelleiam, you can also self-study APs that you’re really interested in. For instance, many people on here self-study psychology, which is supposed to be a pretty straightforward subject to study. The sciences are generally harder and not supposed to be self-studied because you miss the labs.

My school also offered no APs and I’m going to UVA next year. We’re sending kids to Ivies as well. Colleges won’t punish you for the high school you went to. Don’t worry.

Agree with previous posters. Colleges look at the quality/difficulty of courses you took relative to the courses YOUR high school offers.
These days colleges are comparing kids from wealthy private schools, huge public inner city schools, tiny faith-based independent schools, charter schools, international high schools, home-schooled kids etc. Your high school will submit, with your transcript, a school profile that details exactly what the school offers for AP, honors classes etc.
My son attended a school that does not offer AP classes at all and it did not work against him, and he has classmates that were accepted into Ivy League colleges as well.

It’s not gonna hurt your chances. Colleges these days have holistic admissions. They look for the personality of the student, High stats are a bonus; well at least in the Ivies.

You’ll get into every school you apply to, just put in good effort, and don’t let the people on CC discourage you. This is the internet, remember, some people lie.

There’s over 40,000 colleges, you’re bound to enter one with a full ride.
