Your approach is an interesting one. Typically people start a thread by posting a question. The CC message board answers the question in the thread. It becomes their thread and they moderate the answers based on the question. Sometimes they have follow up questions based on the answers provided. I’m not sure I’ve seen someone post an answer looking for a question.

fenwaysouth: When my son was going through the recruiting process, I was able to assist him by relaying some of the advice you (especially) had to offer. While I never specifically asked you anything, I did spend quite a bit of time here reading. Thank you for that.

Not trying to step on anyone’s toes here. I just thought that if I could help someone else with the process I should.

95688Dad,

Thanks for your kind words. I’m sure you have a lot of knowledge and experience to share with the board. Many folks helped me years ago, and I’ve been paying it forward ever since. I have no toes to step on this is a public message board and fantastic resource. I’m just pointing out this is an irregular way to go about it, but I’ll keep an open mind.

The “I am a student here at College X, and am willing to answer any questions” is quite common in the College Search threads.

I don’t see the approach here by the O/P to be much different.

Maybe you could take us through your son’s typical day or week. What does his sched look like, what is his time commitment to his sport?

Thanks for your thread. Son has attended a couple of showcases, big money and frustrating experience. Is it just me, or do they only seem to be interested in pitchers? And it seems the SAT and GPA numbers a college requires can go down significantly if you are over 6 feet and throw 90. Just sayin’ - No room for the old fashioned, all-around player.

The coaches are interested in pitchers because every team uses lots and lots of pitchers. Also, it’s much easier to evaluate pitchers - haul out the radar, watch the arm action, speculate on future physical development and that’s pretty much it. In other words, it’s mostly about evaluating mechanics and physique.

Hitting has more variables - including the quality of pitching the hitter is facing. If, for example, a hitter goes yard against a 90+ lefty, every coach drools. Conversely, the same hitter going yard against a typical 82-4 mph HS pitcher gets noticed, but there is limited drooling.

While there is room for the all round player, potential impact players are the first ones recruited.

Yes, the showcases can be frustrating, and in my opinion, can be a huge waste of time and money.

MODERATOR’S NOTE
Please note that “Ask Me” threads are not permitted on College Confidential, because they deter people from creating threads that get responses from multiple posters, or getting other points of view.

The original poster of such threads is, of course, more than welcome to respond to any questions that are asked on the open boards.
