I tutor a very hard working student in writing. She has not performed as well as most in high school. She got a 24 on her ACT(She did score an 11 on her writing! GO ME!) and she has a 3.0 GPA and in the top half of her class. Obviously she is not looking for an Ivy but what are her limitations? I have no experience with schools like this, I wish I could be more help. She is in concert band, pep band, and marching band, and has one varsity sport. She is a sweet girl that is really lost. Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!

She sounds like a wonderful young woman. She might want to look at some of the less competitive state universities, or branch campuses of state universities. For example, UTenn-Chattanooga is a very popular choice for students with her general statistics. Other states have similar colleges. I have no idea what area of the country you might be looking at or what her particular interests are as far as fields of study. What about West Chester State in Pennsylvania?
A 24 ACT will not be competitive with the top tier of schools usually discussed on this forum (assuming she is not an under-represented minority), but there are many schools where she can get a great education and have a fun college experience.

Thank you very much Mom..., she is open to any area of the country but she resides in Illinois. She has expressed interest in coming in undeclared and deciding after her first or second year. She is not a minority though. I also have no doubt she will be happy with the decision she will make. Thank you very much for your answer and optimism!

A young lady of my acquaintance has a profile that looks a lot like your student's. She also lives in Illinois. She was looking for a place where she could be in the marching band, and could start out as a vocal music/music education major. She looked at Southern Illinois (Carbondale), Augustana (Rock Island), and several other places before falling in love with University of Northern Iowa. She started there this fall semester, and is delighted with her program. Marching band "camp" began about the second week of August.

Some to possibly check into are Ohio University, Iowa State, DePaul, Dayton, Cincinnati, Valparaiso and University of Indianapolis.

Excellent, thank you!

Poi-
Dayton-Accepted
The Ohio State University-Deferred (I understand you meant Ohio University)
I will definitely let her know about the others!
