My teacher is my BFF. <3

One of my middle school teachers has become one of my closest friends (weird, I'm aware, but she's young and super chill) over the years and I was thinking of using her as one of my additional recommenders (since additional recommenders can be pretty much anyone, including friends). Considering that she holds me in high regard both in and out of the classroom, I think she would be able to write a pretty good letter of rec, but I'm worried that it would look odd having a letter of recommendation from a teacher that I had five years ago.... Thoughts?

I think it would look odd, yes.

And maybe add nothing to your application. What could she possibly say about you that would be meaningful to a college application? On what basis does she hold you in high regard?

“since additional recommenders can be pretty much anyone, including friends”

Ummmm NO.

Colleges want rec letters from objective people who can advise them on your fit and potential – such as a job supervisor, coach, clergyperson, mentor. Having a buddy say how wonderful you are is next to meaningless to colleges.

“Recommender types accepted: Arts Teacher, Clergy, Coach, College Access Counselor, Employer, Family Member, Peer, Other”–Common App

But I’ve decided against asking her for one. Thank you all!
