Okay guys, I am currently a sophomore taking Honors Chemistry. I have a B but ofcourse I a aiming at an A. It is hard, really hard, but ont impossible to get an A. Only one kid has an A (junior). Anyways he was telling us that in his AP Chem class there are only 2 A's out of 40+ students. And these are really smart kids, to get in the program mostly everyone had a 3.75+ GPA in middle school. Everyone is frustrated because it is their first B or C they have recieved.

He was warning us against it. He says his class (AP Chem) is harder than the AP Physics class (at my school). I sort of believe him since everyone older than me has been saying that as well. Im scared to take it...

Opinions? What should I do to prep for it next year? Thanks in advance everyone!

I would really understand the concepts now. I don’t know ALL about chemistry, because I’m taking Honors Chemistry next semester. If you can really understand the material then I would take AP Chemistry. If you feel like you don’t understand topics, then don’t take it. Don’t take something you don’t want to. It seems you are interested in chemistry, but it takes lots of hard work. Good luck with you grades :)

Don’t take AP Chemistry if you think your grade might suffer. Unfortunately, getting into a good college takes priority over actually learning in high school these days, so it’s probably better that you take a science class that you can actually get an A (or close to one in); if that’s AP Physics, then take that course.

Also, this chemistry teacher needs to realize that he is adversely affecting students’ college placements by presenting you with such low grades; he should stop taking his class so seriously and realize that handing out only 2 A’s does not make his class “challenging”. Students who deserve an A should receive one, which I am SURE is more than just two students, as many more receive A’s in other AP Chemistry programs (i.e., my old high school’s). Even in my college class ~20% of students must have received an A. So unless there are only 10 students in your class…

@:Fantasy Vesperia: Thank you very much. I will struggle in AP Chemistry if I do take it, but since Junior year is considered the most important I would like to add another AP to my transcripts, but yeah im scared it may ruin my GPA. Thanks again!

@:radian: Oh my God YES! Your absolutely right, I get so frustrated because this is really damaging to all our GPA’s and we genuinely care about our grades. While I wish he would take the class less seriously he wont. Many kids have been pleading w/ him already. He offers no Extra Credit and he gets annoyed when I ask him for help on the problems I got wrong on the test. I want to take it to add another AP in my most important year but I also risk my GPA how you stated. Thanks for the information!

I think AP Chemistry is really one of those subjects in which you need a teacher (like me) contrary to history AP’s which really only require reading. Plus, an AP class on your transcripts looks better than an ap score by itself.

AP Chemistry is a very hard class. I would not recommend taking it unless one already has a solid chemistry background. In addition, I would suggest that one be able to allocate sufficient amount of time to study.
