mystery tutor?

Can anyone who has used mystery tutor before vouch for it? I just started and I was wondering does anyone know if its worth my time?

My opinions:

His ideas on standardization are excellent. They make perfect sense once you think about them, and it truly does make the whole test seem easier because you know exactly what the CB is looking for in correct and incorrect answers.

I also agree with his stance on only using official CB practice material (the 8 practice tests in the Blue Book plus the 6 online ones). A third party who doesn’t know every little detail about the real SAT could never make a real practice test.

Much of what he does is based on trends; on what has happened a majority of the time on previous tests:

His tips on writing the essay include two pages, clear thesis, solid examples, and things that pertain to a reader who only had one minute to read; they all make sense really but they are not things that have not been said before. If you follow them you are bound to get at least a 10 and probably higher.

Writing multiple choice and math strategies involve trying to figure out what will most likely be the correct answer based on the way CB has done things in the past. Although these trends can usually predict the correct answer, they definitely don’t work all the time and Mystery Tutor acknowledges that. I personally don’t use them unless I truly cannot figure out any other way to find the correct answer. Having said that, the strategies are quite reliable if you have absolutely no idea.

The reading comprehension question strategies involve the fact that every answer must be stated directly in the passage. The trick is finding out which portions of the passage are relevant and which are not, and which answer choice is directly stated and which are not. This has definitely helped me.

For the sentence completion questions, he says that there is no need to study vocabulary. He says that learning roots and word parts are enough. I find that, though it takes much more time, studying vocabulary words is a much more secure way to go. Word parts are good for figuring out a word that you don’t know, but most of the SAT words have appeared on previous tests and are thus present in many SAT vocab lists. If you know all of these words then you are better off than someone trying to figure out the meanings of them on the test. Besides, there are some words where word parts are absolutely useless (like blowhard :)).

I think that Mystery Tutor is really good for someone who does not have a lot of time for studying, as his methods will allow you to achieve fairly significant score increases with a fairly small amount of study time. I also believe that it is possible for someone who is extremely in tune with his strategies to use them, and no others, to make a 2400. I, however, am not this person :). Presently I am utilizing his methods along with studying the Direct Hits vocab, and working only CB practice tests. At the very least, I think watching the videos really does provide a better insight into the test. The tips will help test-taking ability on the SAT. As far as studying and preparing goes, if you feel his methods are insufficient, you can always do other things as well (I don’t use other books except for studying vocab).

For the record my score went up 110 points from before using his techniques to after, and I’ll admit I really didn’t prepare that much. Whether all of that was due to his strategies remains unknown  I plan on taking it again and hopefully it will go up again.

lol okay, what you’re sayin makes sense. I agree, all of what he is saying is not entirely brand new info, but from what I have watched so far, he seems puts it in a different light.

Thanks for all ur feedback of his program, he wasn’t going to be my only prep for the test, but I was wondering if I should even make him part of my prep. And I’ve found my answer. I mean I’ll admit I was a little skeptical when I heard that it was a free SAT prep site, but I feel more secure with him now. Thanks again

I actually found his site to be very useful. He successfully sums up everything that I’ve learned from my prep books. Granted, some of his information won’t be pertinent to everyone, (his CR strategy of using line references to get the main idea doesn’t work for me), it’s still a very good resource to use. Some of his standards are dead on, and it’s definitely worth taking a look at.

Hmm. I think you should just pick which tips you feel will help you the best. Personally, I don’t think the majority of people scoring 2100+ will be able to drastically improve their score by only following Mystery Tutor.

hey i dont know if anyone else has noticed but the site is down for ‘personal and legal’ reasons… does anyone have a website where there are complete answers w/explanations for the blue book?
thanks

AHH

I can’t believe it :(!

That was the best SAT prep ever!

This was a complete scam.I think i did bad because i listen to this clown.I stopped reviewing vocabulary and practising math ,because of his great standarts. In the end ==> 1830…Now when i practise like i intended to ,in the first place,i am hoping to get a 300 point improvement.Mystery tutor is for low scorers who want to pull a 1750-1800…
seriously ,dont listen to this guy

is anyone else having the same problem? I cant seem to access his site. His videos were great does anyone know where i can get them besides his site? Youtube for some reason is not listing his videos

-Thanks
–Amman

he deleted his youtube videos. seems like a permanent hiatus.

He helped me so much and got me a near perfect score.

You must have done something wrong…
He got me from a 2080 to a 2300.

wow… did anyone happen to save the videos before they got taken down? That site was awesome, I can’t believe it got taken down. I wonder why he did such a thing?

:(. He helped me go from 1810 to 1940.

Miss you Bunny.

I wonder why that happened to the site

He kept telling that preparation sources other than College board`s are not adequate and maybe some companies sued him.

^Saying that other companies do not provide adequate prep certainly falls within free speech, I would think. More likely, the site had copyright issues with the College Board itself. I didn’t see the videos myself; was he showing the blue book problems along with the answers?

He was always careful not to post diagrams or questions with his solutions.

^Yes. If his OWN posts don’t contain copyrighted material, there’s no infringement. He only mentioned the page, he never actually used anything copyrighted.
