Yale students are Yalies. What do Harvard students call themselves?

Officially I’m pretty sure we’re referred to as Cantibrigians or “Cantabs.” In regular conversation people usually just say “Harvard kids” or something though. Other names you might hear include “Harvardians” and (less commonly) “Crimsonites.”

Yalies are also frequently referred to as “Elis.”

Crimsonites…I love that one! Never heard Cantabs before…Harvardians is the one I’ve heard most often. But I’m a Crimsonite now. I feel like I can take on Superman with that name.

I think Cantabs is more frequently used by those from other Ivy League schools.

at yale we call you cantabs. I thought that it was mostly used by yale students, but maybe other people use it too.

I’ve heard people from Harvard use “Harvardians”. At Yale, “Cantabs” was sometimes used, but it was sort of sports-writer talk, not general conversation, like referring to people from Montreal as “Habs” (which I have never seen happen unless the people being referred to were NHL players on the Canadiens). Mostly, I think we used “those a******s”, but in a loving, respectful way.

A Cantibrigian, or Cantab for short, would be a resident of Cambridge. Of course Harvard students would fit the bill, but it’s kind of like calling Yalies “New Havenites.”

Nice, JHS. :)

I’ve been musing more about this. How can it be that Harvard never developed a functional nickname? Is this related to the general air of slight weirdness around people’s reactions to Harvard, turning Harvard into The College That Dares Not Speak Its Name? (See this current thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/harvard-university/919317-i-wish-i-never-told-anyone-about-my-results.html, plus numerous “H-Bomb” threads in the past.)

Why don’t people use “Harveys”? “Johns”?

Does anyone use “Cliffies” for students who live in the Quad houses?

Anyway, in addition to the scatological epithet referenced above, I think we sometimes just called them “Harvards” back in the day.

I sometimes ask my Ds what their other “Vardster” friends are up to.
