Name of universities in essay?

Can I mention a specific university in my common app essay if I make sure to change it for every school I submit?
Is this normal practice for a Common App essay or not accepted?

Thanks

The Common App states that you should not change your essays from school to school. If a school wants an essay specific to them, they will have a supplement.

The Common App mechanics allow you to do that, but I don’t believe it is common. Most people don’t want to risk sending a college an application with an essay that mentions another college.

^Short of making a new Common App account for every school you apply to, I don’t think it’s possible to have individualized personal essays.

this is not common at all but if you really want to create different versions of your application for different schools you would not create a new common app account. you actually can’t create more than one common app account. And you can’t create differnt versions before oct 19. That’s the day the common app faq says this feature will become available. you will have to submit the app to at least one institution first, then log out, then start over with this link https://commonapp.org/application/applicantlogin.aspx?allowcopy=true</a> then log in from there. once you are in you will click replicate. Use the drop down menu to select which version to work on. after you do this once, you will not use that special log on again. any uploads to your application must be re-uploaded to each alternate version. You will be able to move your ‘my colleges’ from one version to another but they can each only appear on one version each

Why is your essay going to include the name of a university? I don’t think the common app essay should say something about wanting to go to a particular school (if that is why its there)

The whole point of the Common Application is because it’s a common application that you will use for multiple schools. Why would you want to specialize each essay? As others have stated, if the school wants a specific essay they’ll ask for it in the Supplemental Section. No need to make this harder than it is.

I said this a lot of times on this forum.

It is mechanically possible to modify of “personalize” your common app essay for each college, but commonapp tells you not to do that
