Narrowing down the TOP 100 LAC's

The first thing you should do is to completely ignore the US News rankings, as the procedure they use to rank colleges may have little or no relationship to what you are looking for in a college. Do yourself a huge favor and don't get caught up in the whole rankings thing.

To get over the whole "rankings frenzy," I suggest that you read the book, "College Unranked: Ending the College Admissions Frenzy" by Lloyd Thacker (Harvard University Press). Chapters of the book were written by Deans/Directors/Vice-Presidents of Admissions from institutions such as: Harvard, Vanderbilt, Pomona, Grinnell, Reed, Dartmouth, Chicago, etc.

It will provide you with a whole new perspective on the issue of college rankings.

Good luck with your college search!

im not paying much attention to the rankings, although this list will probably include all of the colleges i eventually intend to look at.

whatismouse, it might be a good idea to get a copy of Loren Pope's Colleges That Change Lives if you haven't already. Many of these LACs are in there.

Collegeboard.com has a college preference thingie. You put in your scores, your preferences regarding part of the country, any other features important to you -- eg, sports, band -- and it spits out a list. Have you tried that??
