National High School Musical Theatre Awards

As far as I know, we have nothing like this in Maine. BAL to all involved!!

Nope. No dice for my D. Curious to see who moves on to the finals.

My D competed in the Nevada High School Musical Theater Awards last night at the Smith Center in Las Vegas. This competition feeds directly into the Jimmy Awards as well (the winners go directly to the NYU-Tisch week in NYC). My D didn’t win but it was a great experience and being on that stage where we’ve seen Idina, Sondheim, many touring Broadway shows, etc. was a thrill for her. She is actually going into an acting BFA program so it was a nice cap on her high school MT experience.

How fun is this?? Two of my CC buds will be at the Gene Kelly awards. Both of their daughters won scholarships and will be recognized at the event! I can’t wait!

I attended the Jerry Herman Awards on Sunday, 6/1, at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood. (LA area, feeds directly into the Jimmy’s). I was just there as a spectator with my daughter (her voice teacher is an adjudicator). Such a great night with soooo many talented kids! I’m wondering if any of you cc people were there. My daughter’s school did not participate but she thoroughly enjoyed it, was jealous and is motivated. (Hoping her theater teacher will sign them up next year!) Congrats to all the featured schools, finalists and award winners! (Impressive line up of presenters, too!)

These regional for these was just held tonight and my D is close friends with the guy who won and friendly with the girl! This is so exciting and the first year that our city has participated. The girl is a sophomore and fabulous, comes from an acting family. The boy is a senior and fit his role to a T. Best of luck to everyone and how exciting that they get a trip to NYC!!

Oh and the boy is taking a gap year and get his AA at a local college. He has not mentioned pursuing a BFA although that could change. The girl will be a junior in high school next year :)

My S did not win, so now we call him the Susan Lucci of the Gene Kelly awards but it was fun and he loved every minute. The guy that won the NHSMTAs last year is a business major, I wonder how many don’t go the performing route.

I wonder also because the award events are limited to kids that do theater at their schools and to schools that participate in the awards. In our area the public school with the top drama program does not participate in the awards at all because the program director does not believe in them. There are also many kids, like my D, who do not do theater at their school and are therefore not eligible. That said the two kids that won here are mega-talents planning to pursue peforming, even if the guy is not applying next year.

WOW is all I can say about this year’s winners. The guy is incredibly musical, has written many songs and can play instruments. The girl can seriously sing her face off…I had tears rolling down my face listening to her sing I am Telling you from Dreamgirls…my goodness! AND she was a sophomore when she sang it. I wasn’t there I saw these on YouTube…BTW

MTMC - Sounds like your S did you and Pittsburgh area proud!!

And Susan Lucci did win an Emmy eventually!!

@MTMajorCook I want to see and can’t find it on youtube. How did you find it??

@evilqueen‌ it doesn’t look like the 2014 ones are up on YouTube just some of the state ones. On YouTube do a search on nhsmta

The videos from the awards show isn’t up but they have a bunch of videos from each nominated actor/actresses high school show. I search 2014 NHSMTA if you scroll down a bit you will see Regional School Highlights.

Both winners this year are rising juniors, incredible!!

you can see them here: <a href=“Broadway’s Next Big Stars?
OMG to both of them, especially her. And that set for In the Heights is incredible too. High schools are killing it!!

Wow! Some of those regional programs are HUGE! And some of the HS are doing semi-professional productions. Ours (regional and HS) is very small… very small. Having a bit of envy…

Wow wow wow !

Amazing! Can’t wait to see what happens with both of them. What huge talent!
