I was wondering if winning national history day or being a national finalist is beneficial to college application? If so, how much does it improve your chances (specifically ivy league schools)?

NHD (national history day) is sorta like the intel or siemens competition for history projects, though not as prestigious @soontobecolleger
There is no golden key to college, and there is no way to say, “X award/activity/whatever improves your Ivy League chances by a factor of Q.”
It does look good to commit to an activity for multiple years and show an improvement over time in skills/responsibilities/scores/awards/etc.
