Yes, I am enrolling in a school that does not offer NMSC scholarships. I don’t know enough about the corporate ones; all I know is that neither of my parents work for any of the corporations listed as NMSC sponsors. I’m going to look into that. But my best bet is probably the $2500 one.

That’s the case for my daughter jrs. I just hope that naming a NMSC school as first choice (one which there is a good chance she won’t go to) will not matter for the $2500 scholarships.

In order to be eligible for the $2500 scholarship did you have to do anything?

So far, I’ve just become a finalist, thats it. I hvnt sent anything additional in or contacted them. Am i in the running for this 2500 scholarship?

I know its based on state, but approximately how many total of these $2500 scholarships are given out? (just a ballpark)

Are they really hard to get?

Thanks

2500 are given out on state representational basis. You do not have to do anything. Everyone is automatically considered so you are in the running. They will mail it out tomorrow so possibly in the next 2-3 days after that will be when you hear.

If the college you attend offers NMS (typically for all 4 years) isn’t it a huge disadvantage to receive the one time award from NM? When my D delayed in returning the letter NM called our home (during school) to speak with her. I told the NM representative that my D did not want the one-time award since she could receive so much more from her college. I was told she was specifically being considered and her preferences would not be taken into account. Anyone have any experience with losing the college 4 year award by receiving the scholarship from NM?

My understanding musicquest is that if you receive the scholarship, you don’t have to accept it. In my daughter’s case, if she was offered the one-time $2500 scholarship, she would not accept it if she chose a NMSC school but would accept it if she chose a non-participating NMSC. But, I’m on this board trying to figure this all out just like you.

Any NMS award will go to your account at the college you finally decided (5/1/2010)

If you have a corporate sponsor, you should have been noticed already (like my D)

Or you will get a notice for $2,500 from NMSC by now (Or oops, sorry)

Can you notice NMSC if you need to change your college choice by 5/1/2010

If your school offers you any scholarship, they will tell you if it’s related to NMS and how much. (example from other post, if school portion is $1,000 total for NMS, you will get addition $1,500 from NMSC. Another example like SMU, they will give NMS as full tuition&fee less the resident tuition&fee of your state university, then you will not get any addition from NMSC)

If your school offers you other type of merit scholarship (not linked to NMSC), you will get the full corporate or NMSC ($2,500) even if you have full ride scholarship (8 semesters). You can use extra money in your account of summer programs.

I believe that the notifications for the $2500 awards have just been mailed this week so the recipients of those might not have received those letters yet.

^ Yep, according to their website, it was mailed out yesterday, on the 25th.

Don’t worry. As long as she names her top choice school she’s fine. The scholarship office at the college will now how to deal with this. Call them if you have questions.

Will they mail you a letter if you don’t win anything?

Has anyone received anything? We are not far away but nothing came in the mail today.

S got his letter today! :)

Got mine today! It was for MIT, though, where I was rejected… I need to change my top school choice.

yeah i got it!!!

how long does mail take to get from illinois to pennsylvania? lol I’m hoping mine is on its way…

Me too, stupefy. Except I’m in NJ.

So if I haven’t gotten a letter by now, does that mean I am not one of the recipients of the $2500 scholarship?

My son just got a scholarship offer from a corporate sponsor through National Merit. I wasn’t aware that you could get such a thing if you were not an employee of these corporations.

I received mine today (GA).

To be eligible for college-sponsored scholarships, we have to turn the NM $2500 down, correct? It feels so weird to pass up free money.
