National Merit and Rice Merit Aid

I have to second anxiousmom about this. I know many who got merit aid as well (hint hint: me ). Rice’s fault is clearly their communication and not making people aware of the potential misunderstanding that will result. They do offer very good merit aid. Rice decided to pay for almost all of my tuition and that is why I decided to come to Texas.

As for campus jobs, anxiousmoms list is a sampling of what can be done. I worked for the administration for 3 years in various capacity (housing, dining management, athletics etc.) and netted a good 5-6 k per year. Working off campus as a tutor can make you crazy sums too.

RiceFan, I understand that it sucks that you went in with very different expectations. Please call them and request to speak to the head of department. At the very minimum they may clarify their comments on the web page.

Is anybody able to update this thread? Does Rice still have a standard merit scholarship award for NMSC Finalists? I realize the $1000 a year everyone was discussing in 2011 is not a lot, but every bit helps. Possibly it is larger now, or has been eliminated. Please advise.

@wandlmink I believe Rice has discountinued their national merit scholarship award a couple years ago. Instead, they are allocating the money saved from awarding NMSC Finalists to their need-based and merit scholarships.
