I scored well above the NMSF cut off, but I don't think I've been technically named a Semi-Finalist, yet? I received a letter telling me to name schools as my top choice.

Can I put down National Merit Semifinalist?

No, not unless you actually get that designation. Take the SAT and get a good score and then you will get NMSF. I would certainly report your PSAT score and mention you in the running for NMSF.

Thanks for the response!

Do you know approximately when I ‘officially’ become a NMSF? My SAT should be fine for making the cutoff.

On the other hand, are we able to say we are National Merit Commended scholars, knowing that we made it past the first round? I know my score made commended threshold, but not semifinalist.

Yes, at this point we all know whether or not we are national merit commended (at least!) so put that down until you find if your semi or finalist. If you are 230+ you absolutely are at least a semifinalist!

List that information only as commended since that’s the official designation for now. You’ll probably know if you made it to SFNM before you submit the applications. Just remember to change it.

If your score is greater than 225, you should be safe for most states.
