I have a 224 in NJ. The cutoff for the past two years has been 221. I'm keeping my fingers crossed...but cutoffs don't typically jump that much in one year, do they?

PeteSAT - Yes that's what they do.

I saw someone ask this earlier, but Florida's cut off has been 214 for the past few years and for the years before that it was 213. So, if commended's gone up, i guess you could expect the FL cut off to go up.

The letter just says that you are in the top "50,000 of the more than 1.3 million" people who took the PSAT. But you don't find out till September whether you'll be a semifinalist or just commended. Basically for the letter, it's just telling you that you're in the top 5% and you get to choose two colleges for them to send in some recommendation for.

I just got the letter today. And fingers crossed unless FL's cut off goes up 6 points from last year, I should be safe for semis :)

Oh and the most that I've seen the cut offs jump (the 2005 bunch to the 2004 bunch), was 4 points I think . . . . Though it is unlikely for it to jump 4 points, it can happen.

Yeah, I think you're pretty safe. Even a 4 point jump is statistically unlikely.

Ya! I got my letter today! I'm so relieved. :-)

anyone know how to find out ny's semifinalist cutoff from last year?

also, does a letter mean that we at least get commended?

strappleberry, just Google "national merit semifinalist cutoff" or something like that; you will find a lot of sites.

This letter just informs you that you are among the top 50,000 high performers and offers you the College Plans Reporting Service (CPRS). It also mentions that about 16,000 will be named Semifinalists and 34,000 others will be designated Commended Students around September through their schools.

Wait so the letter doesn't say the cutoff? Then how is it that we know that it's 202?

strappleberry, HELTAHIR posted a link to the cutoffs for the years before at the top of the page. It's something like this:

Oops, that's not the correct link, sorry. Here it is:

thanks for the info!

ahh im so close, 219. hoping it wont go up for next year..

I know! I have the exact same score as you, and I'm just 1 point away from reaching semifinalist in my state! It makes me so mad, especially with all the dumb mistakes I made.

We should all get together and pray it doesnt jump too much ("it" being the cutoffs for this year).

:)

anyone thing the cutoffs might actually go down? i got a 217, and last year the cutoff was 218, so can it go down?

If you came to the US in 2004, although you've lived in the US intermittently (birth-1year, 1st grade-5th grade), does it look impressive that you got commended(209)?

"We should all get together and pray it doesnt jump too much ("it" being the cutoffs for this year)."

Yeah, really. Let's all have a pow-wow and do like an Indian rain dance. Except without the Indians and the rain-praying, and we'll be singing about SATs. But we can still jump around and stuff around a fire.

Ok... I'm trying to figure out whether that was sarcastic or not.

:)

You have got to be kidding me... 202???

As russdelabuss, I also got a 201... looks like I get to sit on the sidelines when what is usually around 40+ students in my class get recognized for being either semifinalists/commended students half way thru next year... God that's going to be embarassing... people used to think I was smart!

Looks like this is going to FUEL my OBSESSION with preparing for the SAT in May...

sigh

lola-cho, may I ask what your selection index was? My D got a 213 and has not received a letter. We are in Tennessee, too. In what part of Tennessee are you located?
