If a student names a sponsor school and submits it to NMC and the student would have been a NMC scholar does that eliminate them from receiving the NMC scholarship? I know a student can only receive one, I am just trying to figure out which one would take precedence.

No it doesn’t affect the $2500 award to name a first-choice school.

Thanks BobWallace!

So I am still confused… what if my D (NMF) receives a letter for a $2,500 NMSC scholarship? But she has not made up her mind about a college yet… and may not until as late as May 1. Some of her schools have NMF scholarships (better than the $2,500), and some have no NMF scholarships (in which case she would want the NMSC scholarship). What are the logistics of this? Do you get to wait to “accept” the NMSC scholarship until you are sure of your college choice?

inparent, I would contact the school(s) that your D is considering and ask them what to do. Last year my S received the $2500 scholarship but I didn’t know what to do as school A that he was considering would give him $4000 ($1000 p/year) and school B would give him $4,000-$8,000 depending on FAFSA ($1,000 or $2,000 p/year) both above the $2500. After contacting both schools, they each told me to accept the 2500 scholarship and for years 2-4 they would give $1,000 per year. Saying this, we are only in year 1 so I don’t know if school A will honor that but I sure hope they will. I kept their e-mail with that information just in case.

Hmm, maybe it would be a good idea to do that discussion via email so I can keep it like you did! If necessary… no scholarship received yet, just wanted to be prepared if she does get one. Thanks!

intparent: Waiting to accept a National Merit scholarship does not give you a chance to accept another. Once a scholarship is offered (ie in the mail), you cannot change to a different one. I think kjcphmom has good advice.
