When will the letter be sent to the schools/student. Has anyone received theirs yet. We live in Kansas has anyone instate received their letter for 2014?

Short answer: February 6 it’ll be mailed to your house.

Long answer: I copy/pasted the entire 2014 schedule from the OSA portal.

January 26 Selection committees begin choosing Merit Scholarship award winners

January 30 NMSC mails notification to high school principals about the status of their Semifinalists;
a Certificate of Merit is provided for each Semifinalist who qualifies as a Finalist

February 6 NMSC notifies Finalists of their status at their home addresses

March 1 Finalists who have reported a sponsor college as first choice by this date will be included
in the first group referred to the institution for scholarship consideration

March 12 NMSC begins mailing corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship offers to winners at their
home addresses

March 27 NMSC mails offers of National Merit $2500 Scholarships

May 1 NMSC begins mailing offers of college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards
(see NOTE on page 3)

May 31 Deadline for NMSC to receive reports of college choice for identifying the final group of
candidates for college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards

Thanks, I have a while to wait.

When do I need to report a first-choice college? How do I do that?

A few of my colleges offer NM scholarships (Denison, St. Olaf, Wheaton IL) but after perusing the FA websites, it appears that only Wheaton wants to be identified as first-choice and does not specify a deadline. St. Olaf and Denison require only “confirmation” of finalist status. Does anyone have experience with these schools? I am planning to contact the admissions departments and ask what the process looks like…

From the Requirements and Instructions for Semifinalists: “To report your college choice or a change in your choice, log back in at osa.nationalmerit.org using the username and password you created when you set up your account.” It looks like the deadline to change it is March 1. The full "R&I"s are here: http://www.nationalmerit.org/Merit_R&I_Leaflet.pdf (You should still contact the admissions folks to make sure)

warriordaughter, I suspect you’ve already done this, but for others considering how much aid a college provides, keep in mind their overall costs to begin with. For instance, Denison and St. Olaf both have total billed costs of about $50,000, while Wheaton’s is only about $40,000 (they like to say that essentially everyone starts off with a $10,000 scholarship).

The deadline to change the college choice is March 1? I won’t even know which colleges will have accepted me at that point…

May 1st is the deadline for first choice college. However, some colleges require earlier designation for their scholarships.

If nmsc doesn’t notify us soon I’m gonna have a heart attack.

What BobWallace says is correct. Just wanted to add that even though some colleges require a finalist to have designated them as first choice by an earlier date than May 1, the finalist can change their first choice any time before May 1st. So a finalist can be in an early pool reported to a school for that school’s scholarship but then change their first choice later if they decide to attend somewhere else.

STEMfamily: Good point. I hadn’t thought of that.

That is basically what my D is doing. She named the second choice oos school as first choice a couple months ago as it does offer better scholarships to NMF. We are trying to see if she can get better merit aid from it by mid-March. Then she may change it to her top choice in state school that she is more likely to attend but does not offer any scholarship to NMF.

@billcsho: I am trying to understand all of this. Can you explain the reason to name a school as first choice ever if it does not offer any scholarship to NMF?
If you get the one time $2500 will they only give it to the school you name first choice and so if you don’t go there do you not get the $2500?

Does anyone know wether they send it by email or mail to your home address? i noticed that they send a letter to your school but they just say they “notify the student at their home address.” I am really nervous(questioning wether I sent in all requirements, wether my guidance counselor remembered my transcript, etc). An email would be lovely and remove the uncertainty of arrival times.

Also, does anyone know if they tell you if you are missing items prior to the due date? I turned my application in weeks before the due date and my guidance counselor submitted it about a week before. It says that it was submitted. I also am sure that I sent in my SAT score. Would it say submitted even if I were missing, say, a recommendation letter?
Thanks for any help, this is the difference in thousands of dollars towards my college education.

@Scoulson1 I got a letter a home about one week after they said they sent them out for National Achievement Finalist. I have not received any email from them at any point, I don’t think. I am not sure if they notify you if you are missing anything. But if you have not received a rejection, you are probably okay for Finalist at this point. And I know what you mean about the money…it is rough to wait with so much riding on this.

Correct. To receive the $2500 NMSC scholarship, you must attend the college listed as first choice on May 1st.

@hsgrad
BobWallace answered your question. My D’s top choice in state does not office special scholarship to NMF, but she still want to get the $2500 from NMSC if that is available. That’s why she will change the first choice school after mid-March.

@Scoulson1

I was missing my SAT scores a couple of months ago, and they sent me a letter asking for them.

@hsgrad I read somewhere that they send rejections after they send acceptances. Around the 9th of February… is that true?

@Scoulson1,
If you have not received the rejection letter, you should be a finalist. You can call your GC to find out or wait a few more days for the mail. The rejection letters were sent several weeks ago. Note that being NMF does not mean you will get any scholarship unless you choose to go to one of those schools that automatically offer that to NMF. Otherwise, only around half of the NMF would receive any money. If the school you applied or your parent’s employers do not sponsor any NM scholarship, the chance is even lower.

I just confirmed by phone with NMSP that my daughter IS a Finalist! All A’s, PSAT score 215 in NH.
