National Merit Finalists...

Are finalists practically guaranteed admission? I got my letter today but I'm still bummed that I was rejected during the scholarship round. In the letter it said that admits + NMF = presidential scholarship, but are we admitted for sure once we get the NMF?

No, being a NMF does not guarantee you admission, but it's a good start. You may have gotten in and will get the automatic Presidential for NMF's later.

NMF is a wonderful honor (congrats!) but it is based primarily on the PSAT, one test given in junior year. To get accepted to USC, you need great SATs or ACTs, UW GPA, ECs, essays, etc, etc. Most NMFs have that whole package, so they are likely to be admitted, but the NMF does not in itself give an edge.

Here on CC we've heard from a few NMFs that did not get accepted, but mostly it's good news. Best of luck.

S's very good friend, NMF, designated USC as first choice, stats on the low end of middle, did not get in.

I see. Thanks for the replies. My stats are above average but no one really knows what it takes to get in, so I'm just hopeful for time being.

cc411, he knows that already? That's the first I've heard of an official rejection. I thought they come out end of March/April?

pachrian- that was for Fall 2007 admission. That student ended up going to UCSB.

You are correct- no rejections have come out for Fall 2009.

Oh, duh! One track mind at work here ;)
