National Merit? Notifications??

i got my letter today ....201 in PA

why do you guys want commended so bad? it doesnt really do anything so it seems.

For those of you that got the letter - did you register for the PSAT yourself, or did the school do it for you? That may be why some get the letter at home and some get it from the GC or the school....(keeping fingers crossed that the cutoff is 200)

I called NM on Friday and they said the letters were mailed to the schools. I'm assuming that's for everybody except for the home-schooled students.

When you say got the letter, do you mean you are a Scholar, or a Commended student? I'm waiting on Scholar notification...

And all Scholars get $2500 for college from the NMSC itself, right?

no scholars are notified for several months. first, this month, the top 50,000 scholars get notified that they are High Scorers. Then in Septemberish you find out if you made it as Semifinalist (top 1% of scorers). You sumbit an application, which includes SAT scores, for a finalist application. Once selected as a finalist, you are in the running to be a National Merit Scholar. So you have a long way to go ceebee63.

Also, some schools dont participate in NM, so those schools i believe would not give you money?

I got my letter Friday!!!

208 in Ohio, but wish i'm sure i'll be put to shame with what others have gotten...

Good luck to everyone =D

Has anyone in Texas received their score? My d is 207 and hoping for Commendable. Of course, we're hoping for more, but....

uofrbound..

someone earlier on said they recieved their letter today in texas from their guidance counseler (gc).

i too am in texas and i will be paying a visit to my counseler to see if they have my letter..

check with your gc

UofRbound, your D will definitely be commended.

ceebee63, not all finalists receive a NM scholarship. Some will receive the NM-sponsored, some a corporate-sponsored, some a college-sponsored, and some will receive nothing at all.

i got a letter at home and i scored 200. i'm not home schooled and my school registered for me..

Has anyone in NY gotten... anything?

Yes, our school in NY received the letters today. And the (national) Commended cutoff is exactly 200: " . . . selected from the 1.5 NMSQT program entrants with a selection score of 200 or above" is the language in the letter.

I'm just wondering, what do our choices for the colleges we pick mean? Like, is this what they would use when they say that they'll only give scholarships to those that pick their college as a first-choice school?

The exact wording on my son's letter is "Your Selection Index score on the 2007 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) places you among the highest-scoring 50000 students of some 1.5 million who entered the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program". There is no mention of the score 200.

OHHHHH you are all JUNIORS!! I get it. I was wondering when we (class of 08) get notified about Scholar status... which actually is pretty soon. So GreenDayFan, I don't have a long way to go! Yay. And since I already know where I'm going (Princeton), it doesn't actually matter that much about being a Scholar. I already know I'm at least a Finalist.

And firefly, don't ALL Scholars (not Finalists) receive something?

Right, bomgeedad - now that I have the actual letter from NMSC, rather than just the email from the guidance office, I see that it was S1's school that inserted the "with a selection score of 200 or above" language.

My son received his letter last Friday. He is in OH and the GC informed all 6 of them at the same time. His score was a 233.
