I took the PSAT as a junior in fall of 2012 and scored a 232. I'm pretty sure I qualified for national merit with that score but I never recieved any follow up or anything and forgot about it until now. Is all the scholarship application and National Merit Finalist recognition over?

Where can I check all this stuff, I can't find my 2012 score on the College Board website. And can I still say I was a finalist on my college app?

Thanks

Talk to someone in your guidance office and have them check. You should be notified in August or September that you are a semi-finalist ( not yet finalist) and you and your school will need to complete the application to attain finalist or scholar status.

Ok so I’m not screwed? The results (who is a semi-finalist and who isn’t) don’t come out until september?

I’m confused because here (http://www.nationalmerit.org/student_guide.pdf) it says that “In April 2013, high-scoring participants from every state will be offered the opportunity to be referred to colleges and universities by NMSC” but I never received anything in April. Am I supposed to check online somewhere?

Thanks for the quick reply btw

Are you a US citizen or permanent resident, verpine? Otherwise, I think your school should have received a letter for you in April or May, stating that you are among the top 50,000 scorers on the PSAT. At that point, you should also receive a card on which you can specify a college of interest to you. As mentioned, the notification of National Merit Semifinalist status comes out in August or September of the year after you took the PSAT–so it will be this fall in your case. 232 will qualify for National Merit Semifinalist status in any state, in any year.

They have changed the policy. First, they don’t send letter to the students but to the school in April. You may ask your school counselor to see if they got you on the list. Second, they don’t offer the college referral to high score commended students anymore. You would need to wait till September to receive the NMSF notification from school.

Your school should have told you in the spring. However, there are schools out there that are not very familiar with the NM program ( especially ones that do not often have kids who qualify).

The quote that you referenced probably refers to sending your scores to colleges, which results in your mailbox filling with marketing material. If I were you, I would just give the National Merit Corporation a call because you should have received something in the mail from them as well. They are VERY nice and can answer your questions. Your scores are high enough that you would qualify in any state. If you are looking for scholarship opportunities through NM, it will be worth your time to call.

Yes, I am a US citizen. I think I’ll take your advice and give NM a call as well as send an email to my counselor to see if she heard anything. Thank you all for your quick responses and help.

My D’s school also do not tell students although they have received the letter. They are not aware not the change in NM policy and thought the students received the notice by mail themselves.
