national merit scholarship finalist.... what now?

I received the notification that I'm finalist. I went to the website and found that only 8,200 people would be selected for actual scholarships, among the 15,000 people who are finalists. So, there is a good chance that I might not receive any merit scholarship, right?
What do I do now?

IF you applied to a school that gives automatic scholarships to NMFs and you decide to attend, then you can guarantee that you’ll get one.

Where did you apply?

IF you didn’t apply to any NM sponsor schools, and your parents don’t work for a sponsoring corporation, then you only have a small chance of getting one of the “one time only” $2500 NMCorp scholarships given to 2500 students. The majority of the scholarships are given by schools and corporations.

There may be some corporate scholarships that don’t require a parent to work for them, but I don’t know which ones those are.

I applied to all of the Ivy Leagues+Stanford. I understand USC has a half-tuition policy. I also applied to University of Miami.

So as of now, can I wait until I get the acceptance letters from colleges?

Btw, my mom(single) is unemployed so i don’t think i’ll get any corporation stuff

Paul - those schools don’t give any or much in the way of NM scholarships. They get so many applicants who ARE NM finalists that they don’t have to. Some “less elite” schools give something small $1000-$2000 per year…all the way up to full ride. But I think all/most had to have been applied to by now (?). So…“can i wait until I get the acceptance letters from colleges” - I don’t really understand. Do you mean, to select a first choice school or something?

Paul, I’m sure your stats are stellar, but did you apply to zero safety schools? I believe there are still some colleges that have a 2/15 deadline and that offer scholarships to NMF. You might want to apply to one just for kicks (and to be safe).

If his stats really are good enough to have a chance at HYPMS, then Miami should be a safety for him. I have not looked into their NMF policy, but I would think he should get a very good merit scholarship offer also. He also might want to see if they have a “no loan” policy for families with low income/assets, if that is indeed the case as implied by his mother being out of work.

“National Merit finalists who are accepted and name UM as their first choice qualify for a Dean’s Scholarship and a $1,000-$2,000 National Merit Award”. The Dean’s Scholarship is merit-based, $16,000/yr.

[Financial Resources | University of Miami](http://www.miami.edu/index.php/financial_resources/)

OP, you’ll have to check with Miami FA people to find out what their deadline is for designating UM as your top pick in order to be eligible for NM. Same with USC.

Did you apply in time for Miami’s scholarship considerations? Do they have rolling admissions? (I didn’t look that part up). Have you been admitted? Received any schollies?

"To be considered for a University of Miami academic scholarship, you must complete and submit the Undergraduate Application for Admission. You may submit your application at UM online, download an application or request one in the mail. Your application/scholarship consideration deadlines are November 1 (Early Decision/Early Action); or January 15 (Regular Decision). "

If you have a single unemployed mom then you should receive considerable aid from the Ivies without the NMF

That would only be true if his father is unable to be considered for support. If it is a divorce situation, then the non-custodial parent’s income is still taken into account. If it is because of death, the father never having been involved in the family, or the father also has no/low income, then the low income aid kicks in.

when do we find out the results of the scholarships?

even if we are going to a school that does not provide any NMF scholarship support, we sitll get some kind of recognition right? (that’s if we make it that far)

Trueskills…

I’m not sure what you are asking…

Are you a senior NMF or are you a junior with a high PSAT?

ARe you asking when you’d find out if you’re awarded a college, corporate, or NMCorp scholarship?

If you’re a senior, where did you apply to?
