So according to NEU's financial aid website, they give these full tuition national merit scholarships (NU Scholarships -- Northeastern University Student Financial Services). I am most likely going to be a NM finalist, and one of these scholarships might be my only means of attending Northeastern. I have gotten offers from other schools (full ride at University of Oklahoma, etc.), but I really love Northeastern. Has anyone received one of these scholarships or know someone else who has?

Hey bobby I probably wont be of much help as i don’t know a single person who is on a full scholarship. I would assume that they would have near perfect scores for GPA and standardized testing and also a compelling story. I had around a 3.6 GPA and 2100 and got 14k but with no honors if that helps for comparison.

If you look at prior threads there is one with student stats and what sort of merit/scholarships they had recieved. I would suggest looking at those for additional detail I wish you the best!

Well I contacted the admissions and financial aid office, and the lady with whom I spoke said that, (in agreement with the previous link I posted), there were 100 incoming freshman who received either the National Merit Finalist scholarship (full tuition) or the Trustee scholarship (full ride). This would be great news for me, but I am unable to verify, because like you said “i don’t know a single person who is on a full scholarship.”

If this is what admissions told you then i would take their comments at face value. They have no reason to misguide you. Anyways the amount of students who recieve the full tuition is less than 1% of the total population so it would be hard pressed to find someone here that either is or knows someone who has recieved the scholarship. I strongly encourage you to look at prior acceptance threads for additionl detail.

I have a friend from MS who got one of these scholarships. She pays no tuition. FYI it is also mush easier to become a Merit Finalist in MS than it is in MA. I think the difference is about 15 points on the PSAT

My son will be a freshman this fall and he was awarded the full tuition Merit Scholarship. I’d be happy to answer any questions you might have. As we understand it, the scholarship is based entirely on becoming a Merit Finalist. Do that, and you’ll get full tuition. It was the deciding factor for my son.

im an idiot

Northeasternkid: Not to be argumentative, but how can it only be 1% of the student population?

Incoming Freshman = 2,923
Full Tuition or Full Ride = 100
thus
Freshman / Full Tuition or Full Rides = 3.42%

But thats probably just my engineering side coming out :)

SimpleJack: Was that meant to be in this thread?

If you are not a National Merit Winner, does anyone know what the stats of someone must be to get the Trustee scholarship?

Bobbymc: I think the 100 students who receive full tuition scholarships represents 1% of admitted students, not the actual number who enrolled. ;)

scansmom: Touche. So are you implying that students who get the full tuition turn down Northeastern, or that those who gain regular admittance turn down Northeastern?

Yes the 1% is the percentage of “admitted” students, not enrollees. And only the admissions office would know what number of accepted students that don’t enroll fall into each category…

It doesn’t really matter however as once the awards are made, there isn’t a “second round” of awards. If someone is awarded full tuition and decides not to enroll, that money doesn’t go to someone else.

RatedPG: Thanks for clearing that up. I understand now.

Having returned late last night from orientation, I can provide the official number of freshman on full tuition scholarship and it’s 91.

From the orientation program we were given, here’s the list of all full tuition scholarships that NEU offers: Balfour, Boston Housing Authority, Boston Public High School, National Achievement, National Merit, Torch, and Trustee.

My son is a National Merit winner and that’s the only program I have any information on. Do kids turn down these scholarships? I’d bet yes…some lucky people don’t have to worry about the cost of college and I imagine some like to go for bigger name schools.

The orientation program, btw, was wonderful. I can only speak for my son’s experience, but if his is typical, the National Merit students are made to feel special from the start.

The Trustee and Torch scholarships don’t require “perfect SATs and gps”. I’m in honors, and I know of many many people who received half, full, or full ride scholarships. Many of them were great students, of course, but many also received their scholarships for other reasons. For instance, there is a boy who is a good student, but who also volunteered over 1500 hours in high school and has a passion for becoming an inner-city teacher (full ride). One boy was a good student, but also spent most of his middle school and some of his high school years on the national luge team (full tuition). I believe that a few scholarships also prefer students from the Boston area or the Mass area, but I believe those are Trustee scholarships that have quirky requirements.

Also, a very large portion of the honors students at Northeastern preferred other schools but didn’t get in. Ask an honors freshman, and chances are that they applied to Ivies and didn’t get in, so Northeastern seemed like a good choice. So it makes sense that if someone had amazing enough grades (or an amazing enough background) to get a full ride, they may have a better chance of getting into a bigger-name school. I assure you that most of the people in honors (even the ones with good scholarships) that I know would have gone to their first choice even if they got zero money there.

Well, no real hooks here, so I got to hope for the national merit scholarship :).

And that is very interesting about Northeastern honors students applying for ivies. I am hoping for honors and not even considering any ivies (although I am applying to MIT, which is as elite as an ivy i guess).

"I assure you that most of the people in honors (even the ones with good scholarships) that I know would have gone to their first choice even if they got zero money there. "

Well I disagree… given the people/situations I am aware of.

Hence why I said “that I know”.

bobby mc: scansmom: Touche. So are you implying that students who get the full tuition turn down Northeastern, or that those who gain regular admittance turn down Northeastern"

it says you have to designate northeastern as ur first choice so students cant get full tuiton and turn it down(usually).

sidenote: how do i quote? i forgot how to
