Did anyone else who's a semi-finalist put down UChicago as their first-choice school? Does it help at all with admissions/do they even see that you chose them as your first-choice school?

What about when you were asked to pick two schools to send your PSAT scores to? Does Chicago even look at those scores?

ahhhh Chicago hasn't received my transcript/counselor's recommendation/school report yet and i'm getting nervous...

I was commended and put them as my first choice. I don't think they care, though.

My transcript, etc etc hasn't been recieved either, eh, it'll be okay. Think of it this way - if they didn't have the online checking feature, we'd never know exactly 'when' the stuff got there. And they didn't always have the checking feature. And stuff always did get there.

That was um, not very coherent.

No, they don't care. In any case, Chicago is one of the colleges that attracts the most NMFs.

I wouldn't say that Chicago doesn't care. My daughter received a letter congratulating her, with some wording to the effect that she should consider Chicago.

Yes, but I was referring to the effect it has on admissions. When I was a NMSF, I debated whether to hold off on sending my midyear report until I found out about if I made NMF. I emailed Chicago and basically got the response that they didn't really care because they knew my scores and other info.

A LOT of colleges send out those letters congratulating students... For that matter, I got a letter from Chicago after taking the PSAT my SOPHOMORE year congratulating me on my score and telling me I should be considering Chicago. That doesn't necessarily mean they care and it is vital to admissions-- it's just another chance to communicate with prospective students.

Chicago participates in the NM program and does award scholarships to finalists, unlike some other top schools. That's all I meant.

I marked U of C as my first choice not to gain an admissions edge but to get their NM scholarship.

You can also change that designation in case you decide to go to another school.

Classof 1986, can you elaborate on the 139 NMS that got money from U of C and what you mean by that? You mean that they received more than just the standard $2000 NMS scholarship in the form of merit aid?

No. Chicago offers three main types of scholarship:
1) Full tuition scholarship (~30 given out)
2) Partial tuition scholarship of about $9500 per year (~100 given out)
3) National Merit scholarship of $2000 per year

classof1986 was saying that 139 received the $2000-per-year scholarship from the university itself. The other 48 received either a corporate scholarship or the $2500-per-year scholarship from the National Merit Corporation.

^ How, generally, does one go about receiving partial/full tuition scholarship at Chicago? Is it the essays and academics they look at?
