National Merit Semifinalist Qualify Scores -- Class of 2012

So, I say do not have a cut-off. Just take the top X % in the nation. This is a MERIT program, and those with fewer resources are eligible for FA at many colleges.

My D got a 200 on the psat in 10th grade and a 225 in 11th. She did not prepare at all for the test other then reading about the consequences of not responding to a question versus guessing and familiarizing herself with all the sections on the test. I now realize how important this test is so I highly recommend that students invest some time in taking mock psat tests. It doesn’t hurt to have one more award to add to their resume.

I thought the point of this thread was to gather information on the state cut offs before they are published on the 14th. Discussion can be helpful, but not when it is obvious people haven’t read the thread from the beginning. Please, people, read the thread before posting. Thank you :-)

Yeah seriously…

Maryland needs to hit up this thread. I got 221 and I’m dying here!

I’m from md and I got a 223, I’m dying too, haha

Does anyone know if the USC half scholarship for NMF is GUARANTEED?

loldaniel…No, it’s not automatic. It’s competitive. Here’s a link to USC’s scholarship info page.

http://www.usc.edu/admission/fa/private/docs/1112/uscScholarships1213.pdf

any news from colorado yet?

s2012 and texaspg - my child was awarded the NM Scholarship of $2500 (a one time gift) and went to a university which awarded $1000 per year to NMFs. The university, however, did not give her the $1000 that first year because she received the $2500 from the NM corp. She is starting her second year now, and I hope to see that $1000 credit on our very high tuition bill! Every little bit helps.

The $2500 can be sent to any university or college. The NMcorp sends it directly to the school earmarked for the student.

Don’t sweat it right now, you will figure it all out when the time comes.

Thanks miami62. Our bigger question was whether NMC gives a scholarship to EVERYONE is not getting one from a school or a company, i.e., is there guaranteed money for finalists to become scholars?

^^^

NO.

Many finalists never become scholars.

There are only 2500 awards from NMCorp. There are 15,000 finalists. Many of those 15,000 do not get cooperate, college, or NMCorp scholarships.

Miami…you need to call your child’s school about that $1k. If that $1k was the official NMF award, then your child may not receive it. It depends on the school…some may give it “unofficially”.

Thank you Wolverine. I was getting confused because several people have implied that the USC scholarship is automatic.

PLEASE DON’T FREAK OUT! Check the explanation of the notation in the first post. When you see, for instance, AZ <= 219, that means that Arizona’s cutoff is no higher than 219. This comes from a report like, “I live in Arizona, made a 219, and got my letter.” When you see, for instance, TX > 216, that means that Texas’ cutoff is higher than 216. This comes from a report like, “I live in Texas, made a 216, and didn’t make it.”

10(?) Boarding school regions
No scores reported yet.
These usually are set to be equal to the highest cut-off score among the individual states in the region.

Internationals=?
This usually is set to be equal to the highest cut-off score among all the individual states.

Commended (national cutoff) = 202 (Class of 2012 Notification Letters - College Confidential)
Any person with a score equal to or higher than this cutoff who is not a NMSF receives commended status. This group represents the highest 50,000 scorers.

New York: 220, didn’t make it according to counselor. :(

I thought I had a safe cutoff score, but apparently not.

samsting: Really sorry to hear that a 220 didn’t make it in NY. I would have thought that was safe, too, since it’s 3 points higher than last year’s cut-off and higher than any of the previous 4 years. Guess NY is following the trend of higher scores this year.

No school here until Wednesday so I guess we’ll have to wait until then to find out here. Hopefully some will know on Tuesday.

218 got DD on the semi-finalist list in KY

Just want to make sure here that your kid went to his/her **1st choice school /b and got both the NMSC 2.5K and the school 1K scholarships, right?

^^^

I don’t think we’re sure that this student has actually received that $1k per year for years 2, 3, and 4.

NMFs are only allowed to receive ONE official NMF scholarship.

So, for that student to get the $1k for years 2, 3, and 4, then the school would have to make that unofficial.

"loldaniel…No, it’s not automatic. It’s competitive. Here’s a link to USC’s scholarship info page.

There are only 4 criteria for getting a National Merit Presidential Scholarship from USC:

1) You must get accepted and decide to attend USC
2) You must be a National Merit Finalist
3) You must choose USC as your first choice college with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
4) You must take the SAT and score high enough to prove your PSAT score wasn’t a fluke.

It is not competitive. It’s only based on the above criteria. So, it’s pretty objective. To me, that’s automatic.
