National Merit Semifinalist Qualify Scores -- Class of 2012

That’s great news about LA! Thanks!!

I expect we’ll be seeing more information this week as many schools around the country make their post-Labor Day starts.

PLEASE DON’T FREAK OUT! Check the explanation of the notation in the first post. When you see, for instance, AZ <= 219, that means that Arizona’s cutoff is no higher than 219. This comes from a report like, “I live in Arizona, made a 219, and got my letter.” When you see, for instance, TX > 216, that means that Texas’ cutoff is higher than 216. This comes from a report like, “I live in Texas, made a 216, and didn’t make it.”

Remaining states that need to be finalized:
AK, AR, CO, CT, DE, DC, GA, ID, IN, IA, KY,
ME, MD, MA, MI, MN, MS, MO, MT, NE, NV, NH, NJ, NM, NY, NC, ND,
OR, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, UT, VT, VA, WA, WV, WI, WY

10(?) Boarding school regions
No scores reported yet.
These usually are set to be equal to the highest cut-off score among the individual states in the region.

Internationals=?
This usually is set to be equal to the highest cut-off score among all the individual states.

Commended (national cutoff) = 202 (Class of 2012 Notification Letters - College Confidential)
Any person with a score equal to or higher than this cutoff who is not a NMSF receives commended status. This group represents the highest 50,000 scorers.

Samsting: I am shocked 220 did not make it in NY! My son was on the line with 217, but a 220? Wow!!

It’s not the number of states with increased scores that is shocking…every year a number go up and a number go down. The shocking part is the amount of the increase. We expect +1 and -1 changes…and an occasional +2 and -2.

The +3 & +4 changes are hard to swallow…and very unexpected.

It’s interesting that we don’t seem to have firm data on the states that traditionally have the highest cut-offs. I wonder why. Are those states notorious for delaying the notifications to students til the embargo date?

I think the biggest reason we aren’t seen scores from the east coast is the hurricane. It put a lot of people behind schedule on the east coast. Also, in DC and Viriginia, and parts of Maryland, school didn’t start until today.

My daughters school got delayed an entire week, she isn’t going back until next Monday.

I’m not sure about MA or NJ, but we don’t start school here until tomorrow (Wednesday). A number of schools in the East start after Labor Day. Hopefully, our son will hear about it then, but with all the craziness of the first day of school, I don’t know if that will happen.

I agree with you, mom2collegekids. It’s the amount of the increase that is surprising. NY is up AT LEAST 4 points and that is quite a jump.

While contractually NJ schools could have started on September 2nd, I’m sure most decided to wait until today or tomorrow due to Labor Day (my niece starts her senior year on Wednesday.)

any homeschoolers receive notice of semifinalist status yet?

I’m in New York and my school Guidance Chairperson absolutely refuses to tell me if my daughter made semi-finalist. The secretary told me they were prevented from telling students if they made it by “an embargo”. The secretary then told me the cutoff - which from reading posts here is wrong.

No idea if my daughter made it. We have the worst Guidance Department in the northeast!

Judging from postings over the past few years, many schools misinterpret the embargo. NMSC’s embargo dictates the schools should not contact the press about qualifiers in advance of the embargo date, which is the date the NMSC goes public with qualifier lists. However this does not mean they cannot notify individual NMSF’s. Many thousands across the nation (obviously) have already been informed of their status.

There is always the chance that our postings are wrong. It has happened before. But it doesn’t happen often.

Unexpected. I’m still shocked, but NY is not the only state with a massive increase in cutoff. I didn’t believe it until I saw Texas had +4. It’s incredible.

@mlaroco1 - If the secretary told you the cutoff, you should know if your daughter made semi unless you do not trust the accuracy of the secretary’s cutoff number. BTW - what cutoff score did she tell you?

I think what mlaroco1 says is the cutoff on this site is wrong, not the actual cutoff number.

My son just called and was told by GC that he made semifinalist in Georgia with a 219.

Child texted — got semifinalist with 230. Three above 225 and five above 213.

Any news for Idaho?

mlarocco1 means she believes the secretary gave her the wrong information based on what she has seen posted here for NY.

twopence - Would you care to say more precisley the lowest NMSF score among the five you know of in TN?

any news from colorado yet?

In regards to schools not revealing the info, the lists have obviously been distributed to colleges. My daughter received some mail today based on her status as a NMSF. So for those of you waiting to hear, maybe you’ll find out from some college postcard.
