National Merit Semifinalist Qualify Scores -- Class of 2012

Is it against the rules for the schools to give out the packets before Sept 14th (the information release date). I asked an english teacher from a different Florida school and she said they have to wait. Is this true, or can I get my hopes up to get it before then?

Schools do NOT have to wait. They can give the packets out as soon as they get them.

They just can’t put anything in the news media about them yet.

There is a reminder not to notify the press about their student’s designation- there is a media embargo on this news until 14 September 2011. The student’s can receive their packets.

“September 14 Names of about 16,000 Semifinalists released to news media by NMSC”

Missouri is above a 211.

Wow! I can’t believe all the state cutoff scores that jumped up! S got his letter today in Texas with a 233. I think this year’s 219 cutoff is the highest Texas has ever been. I remember hearing that it was 218 several years back, but it’s been 216-216 range for a while. Wonder what’s going on with that increase.

when do we have to submit the NMSF application by? i think my school is waiting till september 14th and then they make some big announcement on the morning announcements. im fine with that but i dont want to be crunched for time.

Looks like this might be the information given to 2012 semifinalists: http://www.nationalmerit.org/Merit_R&I_Leaflet.pdf</a>.

I’m quite certain you’ll qualify with your 224, so the one thing you can do now, if you have not already done so, is send your SAT scores to the National Merit Scholarship Program (code 0085). After that, it looks like the application (which I’m assuming accompanies this form) should be turned in to your high school so that they can complete their part and submit by October 12th.

You and my son should still have plenty of time to get things submitted, even if we don’t find out officially until September 14th.

We are homeschoolers in KY and got the letter on Aug 26.

PLEASE DON’T FREAK OUT! Check the explanation of the notation in the first post. When you see, for instance, AZ <= 219, that means that Arizona’s cutoff is no higher than 219. This comes from a report like, “I live in Arizona, made a 219, and got my letter.” When you see, for instance, TX > 216, that means that Texas’ cutoff is higher than 216. This comes from a report like, “I live in Texas, made a 216, and didn’t make it.”

Has anyone posted score from CO yet?

WA = 220 per GC

Thanks crazymomster;

A +2 increase from last year. My senior is above this so I knew he would be safe, but I was hoping that Washington wouldn’t follow the trend as I have another son who will take the PSAT this year.

I got 224 nd my guidance counselor pulled me aside to tell me. But she said keep it hush hush. Nj btw

Yayayayay I got a 224 in NJ. Glad to hear it made the cutoff.

What is the latest date schools will tell a student that he has made NMSF?

Update On MO:

I just heard from a counselor that the actual Missouri cutoff was 213, which is consistent with the scores that I have heard of NMSF around my school.

My daughter heard from a trustworthy teacher that the cutoff in AR is 205, 2 points higher than last year.

Interesting that you should mention about colleges (Perhaps) already have some “inside information”. I noticed some higher-end college info coming in the mail recently that I hadn’t noticed before–Yale, MIT–and that’s what made me wonder if they had some information already. In fact, that’s what triggered me to get on this site to see what I could find out.

Are we sure that Ohio is 214? I asked the guidance counselor at open house and she hasn’t received anything. Or would the principal get this?
