Does anybody know when we get to choose our two choices for colleges?

The letters have been sent out to the schools. Your counselor should have them now, and when she gives them to you you have until 23 May to choose.

Hi, Carpe Aeternum, do you think the PSAT score should send to your no.1 school or relative reaching schools, or a safety shool.

Do you have a counselor/ advisor you can meet with? I recommend doing that to hear her opinion on your specific schools before you make your choices. That's my action plan. :)

I am sending mine to my number one school, my reach. I would recommend making your number one school one of the two schools you have NM contact, but talk to your advisor first- that school may not care about commended status and she might be able to recommend another of your choices that does. My second school will be a match-reach.

What they will send is a notice saying you are at least Commended. The point is to, during the summer, let a school know it is one of your top two choices. The schools you don't send the report to will get to know that you are Commended when you put it on your application.

Where can we find out which schools care about commendation? Do only public schools accept commendation or do private schools like Stanford and MIT accept them as well?

Sorry for my ignorance but I looked and couldn't find any info on the web.

Thanks

Don't worry so much about it. If you score high on the PSAT, you'll get flooded with mail from schools from Yale to WhatsamatterU. (It's a week before decision date, and UT-Dallas and ASU are STILL sending wooing "free ride +" emails to D!) Schools like Stanford and MIT have a HUGE number of NM commended and semifinalists. If you get it, you'll put it on your app, but it's not going to guarantee your admission. (Neither will 2400 scores on the SAT, but it doesn't hurt!) D will be enjoying her $2500 scholarship next year, nonetheless. Good luck.

"Where can we find out which schools care about commendation?"

As far as the two recommendations are concerned, they would indicate the interest of the applicant to those two schools. However, many schools do not give consideration to the applicant's level of interest. But some do.

One approach is to look at the common datasets of schools you are interested in. Section C7 in the CDS lists admission factors and their importance in the admissions process. One criterion is "Level of applicant's interest". You might want to sprcify your two choices for schools that actually consider level of interest.

There is a CC thread on common datasets links for a bunch of schools, or you can google: <school name=""> common dataset</school>

thanks! i just got my envelope today from the counselor

My school hasn't given them out yet. They haven't said a word about it :(

just got mine today :)

Anyone in CA get it yet? My school is notorious for being slow...

I haven't gotten one/heard of anyone who's gotten one at my school

You've still got plenty of time. You've got until May 23 to pick the two schools.

My school always keeps stuff for a long time... we didn't get PSAT results until January.

Yay! I got it! And its much easier to go online to the website they give you to submit your two schools. Just wonderin', what was the commended cutoff??? Did any of you get really low scores (or so you thought) and still get at least commended? If it helps, the lowest I heard was a 212, but that's definitely at least 10 points above the cutoff

I could've sworn I didn't pick two schools back when I got the national merit deal....oh well.

Commended cut off this year was 200. 110 ppl got commended at my school -_-

Hahaha. I had about 12 people at my school commended... I NEVER expected some of these people to have gotten it. My mouth was like hanging wide open when I found out they got it. Amazing. Shocking, actually.

but then again, the cut-off was a 200. Eh, whatever.

AM, that's still just as competitive as ever- just a different curve.

yea i think it was 200. wasnt last yr 203?
