National Merit

Which colleges require you to list them as first choice before May 1st in order to get their scholarship?

To get started:
Boston University - March 1st (Half-tuition)

dont know the dates but:

University of Southern California
University of Arizona

Arizona State University

Aren't you allowed to write down 2 colleges? So you can only get their scholarship if you list them as your 1st choice? Or when you list the two colleges, do you not list them in any particular order?

The "two colleges" phase comes in the spring after you take the PSAT-- before you know whether you are a semi-finalist (and therefore continuing on in the competition) or just commended. Your choices don't mean much at that point. College Board simply passes on your name to those two colleges and lets them know you have indicated an interest in them and that you had a high PSAT score. It's up to the colleges as to whether or not they take any action. Some do, some don't.

Once you have reached Finalist status (which does not occur until Jan - Feb of your senior year), you get to name your "first choice school" -- just one school -- and that's when it really counts for those schools that offer scholarships specifically for NM Finalists.

There is at least one other CC thread with a well developed list of schools that provide NMF money.

Here's an external link of schools that may be a bit dated.

worried_mom., when you say, "It's up to the colleges as to whether or not they take any action. Some do, some don't."

By "take any action", do you mean, offer scholarships?

I mean simply that they may add you to their mailing list and start sending you marketing materials. Remember that the first round (when CB passes your name on to two colleges of your choice) only means that you scored high on one test one day. You're not going to get a scholarship based on that alone.

And remember, you may only be commended and not even a semifinalist.

The Ohio State University--full tuition and half room and board. Must be designated as first choice by March 1st.
