Hi, I'm currently a junior in HS and I'm going to go to a NPD at either MICA or Corcoran in November. I'm in my 3rd year of photography, and my 1st year of art in school, so is it ok if the work I bring is mainly photography? And regarding sketchbooks, mine is very messy and unfinished, mostly filled with figure study drawings that I use for references (i.e diagrams). Should I still bring it? Also, would it be better for me to bring all of my work printed out as photos in a book with pockets (and photograph the drawings), or bring the photo still in the portfolio book and bring the original drawings. Thanks!

bump

Bring the originals of what you can, and don’t worry about how messy/unfinished your sketch book is. That’s why they are called sketch books and not finished drawings. They want to see your train of thought and process behind your work. Neatness does not count.

Bring your photos that you’d like to show (in a book) and the actual sketchbooks of your drawings (not photos) of your work. If you have “pockets” of work you want to show in your sketch books mark them with tabs.

My daughter is a junior and we went to NPD earlier this month. It was great! She brought her sketchbook and about 5 digital images. I would encourage you to bring more. You can bring either the originals or digital on a tablet or something. They like to see your sketchbook, even if it’s messy. If it’s full, you might mark some pages that you really want them to look at.

Bring the originals and definitely the sketchbook (maybe mark the pages you especially want them to see) and get there early. The lines are long for the more popular schools. My D went to a few of her favorites but when the lines grew and time was running out, she went to the lesser known schools without lines and received excellent feedback.

First off, I’m suprised your HS offers many photography courses. I’m assuming you want to be a photography major. Yes, you should print out and neatly organize your photos in the binder and bring the original drawings in a sketchbook with you as well. Have fun on NPD!
