National Society of Collegiate Scholars

Does anyone have any information on this organization? My son received an invitation to be inducted into the USC chapter. The cost is a one-time fee of $75. The office is in Washington DC. Any information would be appreciated.

My daughter joined back when she was in college (She's now 26, so it's been a while!) It is a nationally recognized honor society: they offer some scholarships, etc. For her, it was more of something to put on her resume. I don't know much about the USC chapter, though.

I would lean to it being a waste of money. As with most extracurricular activities, being in something hardly matters if you don't do anything with it. This gets harder for honors organizations, but there are some perks. Some offer scholarships (Alpha Lambda Delta does as well), and I'm sure quite a few participate in community service. If you're looking to get involved in that stuff, then that may be a way to do it (although I'd say there are much better ways to do so).

I've been told that Phi Beta Kappa is the only one that really looks impressive on a resume. Again, that doesn't take into account what you do with an organization - being the president of ALD and leading service initiatives would be great - but in terms of just joining, and having that name to show, PBK is the only one that will be of any help (I think there's a very good engineering one as well).
