I got an invitation at the end of the semester to become a member with a 75 dollar one time fee. I did not have the money to pay it at the time, and they have extended the deadline to join twice over email now. I have wanted to join and now have the money, but am concerned about if it is legit or a fruad. Has anyone had any experiences with them?

I got their invite and didn't sign up for it b/c there was no club or anything physical on campus. I mean there's no point in having your name in a book and putting it on your resume cuz I don't think many employers know what it is. I also turned down National Honor Roll and some other things that required a fee to get your name in a book.

There have been previous CC threads on this organization:

But I happen to prefer this description from another board:
"I joined NSCS and it's all in what YOU DO. If you commit to being an officer, to organize volunteering events, to go to volunteering/social meetings, then you have got your money's worth. If you just pay and never go to the meetings and participate, yes, it's pointless."

FWIW my D declined to join.

Our son joined (there was a group for this honors society on campus) and I found the person who was the contact for the Semester at Sea scholarship to be very cordial and responsive. When our son went on Semester at Sea (SAS) in summer of 2004, this honors society only had scholarships for SAS in the fall and spring semesters, not the summer semester, though they had other travel abroad scholarships for the summer (and these could NOT be used for the summer SAS). I wrote (too late for the summer of 2004 trip our son took) that they ought to have a summer SAS scholarship, and sure enough, there was one for the Summer 2005 sailing. Our son was also a scholar of the day (or week, whatever it was - his photo and bio were up on their website years ago) with this honors society, which is a pretty small note for a resume, but all the same, they do try to acknowledge their members. I think they are a legit organization, even if they do turn a profit like I think most (if not all) honors societies do.
