Does anyone know what this is? My kid got an invitation, and I'd like to know if membership is worth the $75 or if it's just a vanity thing to add to a resume.

My understanding is that it's just a money making scheme and anyone who sends them $75 gets a certificate, whether they have an invitation or not, so it adds nothing to a resume.

Phi Beta Kappa, join that one if offered. I'd skip this one, though.

Yeah, I think people asked this question on the College Life forum too. Like dntw8up, it's a money making thing and grad schools, etc, don't really care about it or consider it a worthwhile society.

This issue comes up every year. You might want to do a google search of CC to find the previous threads.

Frame the letter...much less expensive than joining.

Not likely worth the money, but congrats to your kid nonetheless :)

Well it means your kid is in the top 20% of his/her class. So congrats. I joined and the club is active on my campus so to each his own. We do a lot of community service and the likes. It isn't something I would mention on a resume, however. It would sound pretty corny.

You think?? Well my DS got this year after year...and he didn't make the cut off for graduating with honors (by .2) which was top 20% of his class. I think they just mail it to anyone who gets on the Deans List. DD hasn't ever gotten this mailing..and she hasn't been on the Dean's List. DS made that every term (yes and he still didn't graduate with honors).
