Does anyone have any information on this membership? My daughter is a freshman at Texas A&M and she got a letter in the mail because she is top 20% and has at least a 3.4 grade point average. The envelope says Texas A&M University Chapter on the outside, but I am so suspicious of scams these days. It cost $75 to join. It states it is the honor society for high achieving first and second year students. It also states that it provides members with opportunities like scholarships, leadership development programs, internships and service activities on a national and chapter level. A convocation will be held at A&M in the fall for new members. So, does anyone have any knowledge of this??

Don’t join. If you’d like…frame the letter of invitation.

There is a lengthy thread on this subject–use the search function to find it. The consensus of opinion is that it’s not an honor that is recognized anywhere and is a waste of money.

There are few honor societies that are truly worth it. I am pretty sure that the NSCS doesn’t rise to this level.

The ones I would look at are the honor society of students in her major (usually invited junior / senior year) and the Mortar Board if offered at your Ds school.

If your D eventually applies to graduate school, she can legitimetely say she was invited into the NSCS even if she doesn’t join.
