national society of high school scholars?

Real or Fake? They are charge $60 to join, but there are some other stuff that charge money that are totally legit. So real or fake?

I became a member without knwoing what it really was. I was so happy to be invited to join…just to find out that it is fake. Not fake in the sense of not real, you pay money for what you get but what you get is shoddy and it is not an honor.

I think it’s looked down upon if you have it on you application.

^
It does not look bad, it’s just pointless to put on beacuse it has no purpose.

Thank you I’m throwing it away thanks :)

Things that impress universities do not make you PAY to join .This is a meaningless "society " that does claim to offer some cash awards ,but why does it cost you 60 dollars to join ? Save your money.

^ Good.
Do not waste that money.

Yea, it’s fake. Don’t waste your time lol.

Not necessarily a waste of money. I’m a semifinalist for their academic scholarship which is 1k or 5k (I’ll find out how much I win later). If you think you have what it takes for the scholarship, by all means join the society.

If you don’t mine me asking, what are you stats

If you registered for the Student Search Service and scored high enough, you’ll automatically get a letter. While they may give out legitimate scholarships, chances are probably extremely low–or at least low enough so that they can make a profit and then give out a scholarship every once in a while to remain ‘legit’. It’s not an outright scam in that they don’t do anything but take your sixty dollars and try to sell you more stuff, nor do I think it is beneficial–it’s in a gray area. It’s unlikely it’ll help you at all in college applications.
There’s only one real scholarship organization that charges money that’s legit that I know of (Scholastic Art and Writing Awards), but that at least judges on merit beyond a high PSAT/SAT score, and my counselor knows about it.

Hmm I actually think I might join hearing about it…might be worth it

I suggest you read [just about every other CC thread](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/search.php?searchid=27448712) on it first.

I’m always wary of anything that doesn’t come through my school’s principal to me, or through a club or something. Generally those outside “societies” and the like are really just for-profit entreprises, which though they might not be outright scams, are certainly not a major boon to your application or mental growth.

I have read alot of this and what people think about it…everyone keeps saying that it doesn’t impress colleges but I say it’s not for that its for the opportunities.

It’s a complete waste of money. Just don’t.

the opputonities cost 1000’s. After paying the 60 or whatver do you want to pay 1000’s for these supposidly great opportunities?

S2 joined for $45 and won the national scholar award ($1000) and a research paper award ($350). So in a bit more than a year, $45 grew to $1350. And no, he did not list membership in the organization on his resume or college apps, but he did list the national award. So if you are a student of the caliber that would make you competitive for these awards, it may be worth it to join. If not, do not waste your money because mere membership is not worthy of a listing on your resume.
