National Student Load Data System -- incomplete information?

My daughter received federal financial aid for the 2011-2012 school year in the form of a Stafford Direct unsubsidized loan ($3500) and a Stafford Direct subsidized loan ($2000). In the process of moving out of state to her school, she misplaced the information regarding the loan servicer for these. She would like to start paying the interest on the unsubsidized loan now, but doesn't know who to contact.

The FAFSA website says that the National Student Loan Data System should have a list of all federal student loans for a student. We looked there, entered her SSN, DOB, and pin and there are no Stafford loans listed. Her school's financial aid records show the loans were disbursed in Aug 2011 and Jan 2012. They do not have information on the loan servicer.

Any suggestions on how we might find out who the loan servicer is for her loans? It's somewhat disconcerting that her loans don't show up in the database at all!

Thanks, missemily516! We tried this but when registering for an account got this message:

“The DOB is not associated with the SSN on file. Please try again or contact your lender/servicer.”

Since we are trying to find out who the lender/servicer is, we are stuck!

My daughter is now trying to contact the financial aid office at her school to see if perhaps they submitted her SSN or DOB incorrectly. However, since she also has a Perkins loan through the same school and that shows up in the NSLDS database, that seems unlikely.

Sorry it didn’t work - that is where after a long search we found my daughter’s loans. Good Luck!!

Well, the school’s financial aid office says that the Perkins loan was processed through them and all info on DD is correct. The Stafford Direct loans are outside of their ‘control’ and they have no info on them and don’t know why they aren’t in the NSLDS. They said to check the NSLDS database again. (We’ve been checking it since May 2012 and the loans should have shown up by Sep 2011).

Should we be working so hard to find who we owe money to? ;-)

The school is wrong. They CAN find out who the loan servicer is. I am a bit concerned that the SSN for your D was incorrectly entered in the system. I say this because you did not get a match for the SSN in myedaccount, and NSLDS does not show a loan. I suggest you contact the school again and ask to speak with the associate director or director. The school needs to look at her loan record and see if everything matches (spelling of name, SSN, DOB). If it does not, they can put in a ticket to fix it. If everything is correct, they can help you find the information you need. My money is on a mistake, though. Sometimes the problem occurs on the back end, and you would never know it. I once had a student whose loan we cancelled, and it showed up as cancelled on the government processing system. Somehow, though, the record that went from the processor to NSLDS never processed … it took well over a year to get it straightened out. Make a friend in the financial aid office & get the info you need.

Thanks, kelsmom! I will give them a call tomorrow. I hope that they will talk to me about my daughter’s loans. It’s been an issue in the past even though we’ve filed the FERPA! Will let you know what I find out.

In the meantime, I found a list of loan servicers and have tried to create online accounts with each to see if anything pops up with DD’s info. So far we get the same message about the ‘DOB doesn’t match the SSN’ and ‘contacting our loan servicer’.

Well, evidently it’s my bad! But overall good news! Though the 2 Stafford loans had been accepted by my D and showed up in our statements from the school as disbursed, they never were disbursed so my D does not owe any money. I assumed the loans had been applied to our account and just paid what the installment statement said we owed each month. At least we know that the NSLDS database is correct (D’s Perkins loan is showing) and that the information they have regarding her DOB and SSN is correct. Lesson learned: when you have more than one in college you need to be even more vigilant with the financial aid, loans, etc. than you think!

i had some troubles, also, with one of the service providers. Received the same error you did. A phone call generally cleared everything up. In my case the month and day were switched in the service provider’s system…you know how some things ask for month-day-year for birth and others ask for day-month-year…I think someone just submitted something along the way that had them flip flopped so when S2 tried to sign up for an account to review balances, it returned that error. We just reviewed all the data points with the service provider and found the error. So check birth date also when you call. We did a three-way call with the college and the service provider and my son.

Hi! I have the same problem. I just want a straight answer because I have talked to almost everyone from my school- the staff at the financial aid office, my classmates, and even past students. So far none has given me an answer. I still can’t open an account at myedaccount.com. I’m starting to really worry because I cannot have a deferment on my account. Please I need help!

I also checked the nslds website and it says that “Your identifiers were not found in the NSLDS. If you have received financial aid and believe that you should be listed in the NSLDS, please call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID between the hours of 8AM and Midnight (EST), Monday through Friday, and 9AM and 6PM (EST), Saturdays, to report this situation and receive further assistance.”

I don’t know what this means. Am I in big trouble?!?!

They told you what to do. Call that number to receive further assistance.
