I was wondering which colleges have respected programs in Naval/Maritime Engineering. I already know about Webb Institute, which really isn't an option because I already am in college. I also know that Berkeley, Michigan, and Wisconsin have degrees in this, but sometimes the best schools aren't always the most well-known. Thanks for any help on this, I would like to get some comments from anyone who knows anything about this, if there is anyone on these forums who knows about naval engineering.

Do you want to design ships? Much like with aerospace engineering, if you get a bachelors and masters in mechanical or structural engineering from pretty good programs and get a little experience in finite element work in grad school, naval design companies are typically willing to snap you up and train you the rest of the way. You don't have to have a naval/maritime engineering degree... Most of the guys there don't.

Just don't turn out another design disaster like the Zumwalt-class destroyer; yeh, the technology in it is nifty, but damn, where's the stately grace of a sleek ocean-going ship?

Universtiy of Michigan and Webb in NY.

Most of the dorkiness is kept below the waterline, thankfully.

The academies of course plus the merchant marine schools

Texas A&M-Galveston (ABET cert)
University of New Orleans
Memorial University of Newfoundland (great work study)
Florida Atlantic University
Virginia Tech (in the same department with aero, which makes sense)
MIT

Last year Webb accepted a "freshman" with an undergraduate in Physics, so Webb might be an option (if you want to go to school forever)f

FAU founded ocean engineering and has a satellite campus (SeaTech) devoted to that discipline. Furthermore, a human-powered sub built by FAU’s OE club won first place in the speed category over teams from respected schools like University of Michigan.

As toadstool mentioned, there’s two obvious ones:

[United States Coast Guard Academy](http://www.cga.edu/display.aspx?id=507)

[Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering Department at the U.S. Naval Academy](http://www.usna.edu//NAOE/index.html)

Can’t get much closer to the real world need than going to either.
