Hi! I'm a junior in highschool. I'm wondering what graduate degrees I could get with an undergraduate in naval architecture and marine engineering. For example, if I decided I didn't want to get my masters in NA and ME, could I easily go into mechanical engineering? Med school?

Also, is NA and ME a good field to go into? (job satisfaction, average pay, opportunies to help society, how women fit in the male-dominated field, etc.) I've researched it quite a bit, but there isn't a lot of information available.

Maine Maritime Academy
United States Coast Guard Academy
United States Merchant Marine Academy
United States Naval Academy
University of Michigan
University of New Orleans
Webb Institute

But some other schools may have a mechanical engineering department that has naval architecture as a subarea. You may want to consider those schools if you need a greater selection of schools to select from.

@ubcalumnus - I’m looking at Webb Institute. If I went there, I might want to get my graduate degree in a different area at a different school later. I would need to get my undergraduate in NA and ME. I just can’t find much information about what other careers a degree in NA and ME would qualify me for.

^ A full ride! ME grad school would be no problem. For med school you’d have to go to a post-bac premed program to pick up organic chemistry, biochemistry, and biology and then take the MCAT.

@chefmomm - I have a 2400 SAT, 800 SAT II Math II, 800 SAT II Lit., 790 SAT II Physics, 4.00 unweighted GPA. I applied ED to Webb, and I’m super excited to be going there in the fall. Best of luck!

Thank you. Son sent his app in RD. Hoping he will joining you in the fall! Been on campus twice, did an overnight visit in the fall. How was the interview?

The interview was about an hour long. It’s suggested that you wear a suit (or a nice dress). Everybody involved was really friendly. I think there are usually 30-ish qualified ED applicants. I received my admission decision the day after my interview (late November).

Congrats to you! It’s an awesome place. I hope that I am able to update that my son will be your classmate. Where are you from and did you apply to other NA/ME programs?

I’m originally from NC. Since I applied ED, I didn’t end up applying to any other NAME programs, but I know MIT has an oceanic engineering program. Best of luck to your son! By all means let me know if he makes it, and feel free to send me a PM. :)

Tried to PM, but can’t because “I don’t have enough posts”. Silly. What is your previous experience with engineering, if any. Did you submit a resume along with the application, and if so, do they talk about that on the interview?

Most of my family is in engineering, I’ve done a couple engineering internships, and I’m heavily involved in FIRST robotics. I did put in a resume, and it was a pretty big focus in the interview. I’ll send you an e-mail. :)
