Past boarding school grads and parents of past grads, or anyone else who may have some insight. Did you use Naviance as part of your college process? What light can you shed on Naviance, good and bad?

I am a Naviance novice so to speak. Just started using it this summer.
I like the scattergrams so I can compare my child's stats with others in his school in terms of acceptances. It is also reassuring to me to see that yes, kids with GPAs that might draw comments of "go to community college" on this board ,actually get into Ivies and many of the top LACs out of his school.

Momof2sons, at my d school, they do not have a parent code, so we have to get the code from our child. Did you face this issue? Or did the school provide the parents with their own code? Are your kids in bs? day? Public? thanks so much

I think Naviance is awesome. It is less good where there are only a few data points, of course. I liked perusing other school's programs, too. Many will let you sign in as a guest. I think our son had to give us the password, but I don't really remember.

My son's school uses Naviance. They gave us our own password. Our son has his own. I think it is very insightful. It is interesting how with the Ivies it is really hit or miss. Easy to pick out the legacies. Other schools it seems every kids above the average is accepted and every kid below is denied.

Prepparent, it is used at Miss Porter's but, as yet, I have no experience with it.

What, exactly, is Naviance?

We use our son's password...he attends a private day school

My d has not offered it to us, I'm not sure she wants us to be looking at her choices of colleges as of yet. I guess I'll ask and see if she'll give us the password. Unfortunately, Middlesex says that we have to get the password from the students. At st. George's they give a seperate code to the parents.

The averages from scattergrams can make students over confident if legacy/recruited acceptances are not filtered out.

OK, My d gave me her code and password. Where do you find these scattergrams. I found the section on the number of apps vs. accepts and enrolls. Where are the scattergrams?

Hope, I was wondering if the scattergrams differentiate the legacy, athlete, URM,etc

prepparent, Naviance is certainly capable of printing out scattergrams by race, legacy, athlete etc. But I do not think that students are given the permission. Your D can ask her college counselor to show categorized scattergrams of colleges of her interest.

hope1618, thanks for the info. Momofwildchild, how are you getting the scattergrams? I would think it would be very important to know if a class to a particular college has a specific category they favor. Who knows if all Harvard matrics aren't athletes? Legacies, etc One thing for sure, you can tell what schools are the safties for the students. I'm encouraged from this perspective. Some of these schools are not chopped liver, if you know what I mean.

Tommeister, naviance is a service/software that you can access in your Junior year; it allows you to look at all the schools/colleges your scholls students apply to , providing all stats.

oh, okay. Is it only accessible in Junior year?

Yes, as far as I know. At least at my d school it is. It is really for prep of applying to college.

Once you enter as a guest for a particular prep school, go to the college section on the list and click on scattergrams. Sometimes you can find schools (prep) hit or miss. Just try this link:
https://connection.naviance.com/fc/signin.php?hsid=Blair
Go in as a guest. You can replace "Blair" with any number of school names and you are in! There is nothing wrong with doing this, by the way. Anyone can go in as a guest. You don't have access to specific student info.

"You can replace "Blair" with any number of school names and you are in! There is nothing wrong with doing this, by the way."

Blair have very low security protection. Most of the schools require passwords even as a guest. Some schools do not have guest access.

How do you change the school name from Blair?

I've been lurking and now have discovered how to change the school name.

Let's say you wanted to look up Gilmour Academy in Gates Mills OH.

Instead of https://connection.naviance.com/fc/s...php?hsid=Blair

it would be https://connection.naviance.com/fc/s...php?hsid=Gilmour

I tried several school names and most do not have a guest entry. Gilmour does have one.
