navy guy with a complex transfer case, help please!

i seem to be lost in the college transfer process. i need to figure out the best school i can get into and i am looking for anyone with advice.

I am in the navy, and have roughly 1 year until i get out, i will be applying to transer to a 4 year university in the fall of '14. i messed up pretty bad my first time around in school, and have rebounded. i want the best school possible for my stats here they are.

1st go
27 semester credits w/ 1.7 GPA

2nd go
A.A. from columbia college
28 semester credits w/ 4.0 GPA
24 CLEP credits w/ high scores
1900 SAT retake
plus 7 month deployments to iraq, and other middle east countries

i will also take at least 7 more courses including precalc, calc and others but i should still get A's.
any experiences from veterans who have transferred would also be appreciated.

schools i am interested in are oreogn state, UW, Uof M- anne arbor, UofI- Urbana, cornell, Columbia(new york) and other top tier schools.

Is cost a concern? In what state are you a resident? Which UW: WA, WY or WI?

You might also try posting on the Non-Traditional student forum (under Admissions, Specialty Topics).

no cost is not a concern, i have the post 9/11 which will cover most of the cost, and for a great school i am will to pay a little extra.

Make sure you spend a lot of time on essays. Get feedback! Be sure to have a strong story about what you want to do, what you bring. Single minded message.

Military vet here. it helps to make a strong essay around you military service. ivies and the very best schools are a.crap shoot. you can have perfect sats and grades and get denied. you should have a good shot at most medium to upper tier schools with a few good essays.

Just to give a heads up, I am pretty sure that the VA no longer covers non resident tuition. I could be wrong but I am pretty confident that the service member will be responsible for the difference between in state and out of state tuition. This could actually be quite a bit steeper than “a little more for a good school”. Just an FYI.

Very true. I go to school out of state community college and pay around $3000 out of pocket a semester

Just realized from your name that you’re probably an OR resident. If what the last couple of posters say is true about cost, you might want to consider WUE schools, where you’d be paying 150% of IS tuition:

[Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) | Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education](Save On College Tuition | Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE))

If some of these schools do look good, be sure to go to the college website for details that aren’t given in this general website, as some schools limit majors, gpas, etc.

Also, I forgot that there’s actually a Veteran’s forum in the same place as the NT forum I mentioned earlier.
