GA ... the Wayne Hardin story is interesting.

Still, I'm not sure what kinda challenge that'll be to put all those folks in the Temple seats vs. USNA. Heck, l'il ole Slippery Rock Teachers Colleg put 60K+ in Michigan Stadium for their annual battle vs. Shippensburg, Putting the same # in the Philly arena ought to be a piece of cake, especially if USNA fields a fun team to watch.

Voting Opens for Navy's Hobbs and Senior CLASS Award

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The voting period for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award began Thursday night, allowing fans to cast ballots daily over the next month to help select the All-Senior CLASS Team and the Senior-of-the-Year award. Navy's Kate Hobbs (Wexford,Pa.) is one of the 10 finalists appearing on the ballot.

Fans can vote once per day by going to the award's web site -- http://www.seniorclassaward.com -- and clicking on "Vote" followed by "Women's Basketball."

The 10 finalists for the award were chosen by a national media committee from an original list of 30 semifinalists. The award winners, which will be determined from votes cast by the general public, a media contingent and a panel of coaches, will be announced April 1 during Final Four weekend.

Presented annually since 2002, the award recognizes an NCAA Division I male and female senior basketball player of high character who excels on the court, in the classroom and in the community. The word "CLASS" in the award title is used as an acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School.

The idea for the award was conceived by sportscaster Dick Enberg, who continues to serve as its Honorary Chairman.

Hobbs has totaled over 900 points and 500 rebounds during her career, ranks third in school history with 91 career blocked shots and holds the school record with 114 career games played.

The captain of the Mids this season, Hobbs has posted a 3.17 cumulative grade-point average as an economics major and has received multiple academic honors during her career from the Naval Academy. In addition to service selecting Navy surface warfare, she also hopes to attend medical school in the future.

Navy Rifle Shoots For MAC Title This Weekend

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy rifle team will prepare for next weekend's NCAA Championship by hosting the MAC Championships on Saturday in the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range. The Mids currently own an 8-4 record and were one of eight teams selected for the NCAA Championships next weekend. There will be over 40 shooters from nine teams competing this weekend in the all-day event.

"We are certainly favored, but its very important for us to not look past this match," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "Akron is a very good team and we can't take them lightly or they will beat us. This has always been a good tune-up for us heading into the NCAA Championships and we will see what works and what won't work for next weekend."

Navy, which hasn't shot in two weeks, is led by seniors Chris Schneider and Sarah Bergman. The duo realizes this is their last chance to make some noise collegiately and Kelley has seen the leadership really come through in the last month.

"They seem very hungry and intense to me," said Kelley. "With seniors here, there are a lot of other things to worry about. But with them, it has been different than in the past. Chris (Schneider) is training as hard as he ever has and Sarah has been very intense. They know what their job is and know what is at stake. This is their last go-around."

With a pair of seniors in charge, Kelley is expecting a strong performance this weekend.

"I think we are very motivated," said Kelley. "I expect us to have some great scores this weekend, which will give us some momentum heading into next week."

The NCAA Championships will be held next Friday and Saturday in Fairbanks, Alaska. The Navy contingent will leave on Tuesday.

Scouting Central Connecticut State
Central Connecticut State will open its 2007 season when it travels down to Annapolis for a three-game set this weekend. The Blue Devils are coming off a 2006 year where they won the Northeast Conference regular season title with a 16-7 mark and finished the season with a 33-18 record. As a result, Central Connecticut State has been tabbed the preseason favorite to win the conference in 2007 by the conference’s head coaches.
The Blue Devils return several key elements from last year’s squad in both hitting and pitching. Central Connecticut State hit .313 as a team in 2006, and welcome back six of its seven starters from last year that hit above .300. Sean Salvatore led the team with a .378 batting average and belted 15 doubles, four home runs and 34 RBIs, while swiping nine bases. John Romano hit at a .355 clip as junior last season, smacking nine doubles, four home runs and 43 RBIs.
On the mound, Central Connecticut’s starting rotation returns pretty much intact. Matt Gianini went 9-4 with a 2.75 ERA in 85 innings with 60 strikeouts and held the opposition to a .208 batting average. Evan Scribner boasted a 7-4 mark with a 3.25 ERA in 91.1 innings, while Adam Piechowski registered a 5-1 record and a 4.16 ERA with 53 strikeouts in 67 innings of work.

Last Year Against the Blue Devils
Navy took two games in a three-game set against Central Connecticut State last year in Annapolis. The Midshipmen swept the Blue Devils in the Saturday doubleheader, but the guests rallied in the final game to avoid a three-game sweep. Right-hander Mitch Harris (Mt. Holly, N.C.) tossed a complete game in the opener to get the win, scattering eight hits and striking out four. In the nightcap of the doubleheader, right-hander Mark McCoy (Parkland, Fla.) carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before allowing his first base knock. In the series finale, Central Connecticut State tallied nine runs over the final-four innings to come away with a 12-9 victory.

Navy All-Time Against the Northeast Conference
The Midshipmen own an all-time mark of 17-12 (.586) against teams affiliated with the Northeast Conference. Navy has played Central Connecticut State (2-1), Fairleigh Dickinson (0-1), Monmouth (5-6), Mount St. Mary’s (10-3) and Wagner (0-1) during its 112-year program history. The Midshipmen have not met Long Island, Quinnipiac or Sacred Heart on the baseball diamond.

Scouting UMBC
UMBC enters the weekend with a 0-3 record after being swept in Williamsburg, Va., against William & Mary last weekend. The Retrievers were out-scored 22-7 in the series and held to a .189 batting average, while allowing the Tribe to hit at a .375 clip. The one bright spot for UMBC last weekend came in its defense, which committed only three errors in three games.

Last Time Against the Retrievers
Navy and UMBC split the season series in 2006, with each team winning on the other team’s home field. After Navy had rallied to take a 6-5 lead going into the ninth in the first meeting in Annapolis, UMBC scored two unearned runs off Navy closer Ryan Hefner to pull out a 7-6 win. The Midshipmen returned the favor in Baltimore one month later, as the Mids used pitching to defeat the Retrievers, 5-1. Southpaw Daniel Kovalcik (Westwood, Mass.) scattered two hits over 5.2 innings with four strikeouts to get the win. Jonathan Johnston went 4-for-5 with three stolen bases in the contest.

Navy All-Time Against the America East Conference
The Midshipmen own an all-time mark of 31-30-1 (.508) against teams currently affiliated with the America East Conference. Navy has played Albany (0-1), Hartford (3-0), Maine (2-2), UMBC (1-216) and Vermont (14-11-1) during its 112-year program history. The Midshipmen have not met Binghamton or Stony Brook on the baseball diamond.

Navy’s 9-2 Start Best in 18 Years
The Midshipmen are off to their best start since the 1989 season with their 9-2 record to open the 2007 schedule. The 1989 team went 10-2 to start it season, while the 1981 squad started 12-2 and the 1980 team opened the year with a 13-2 mark.

Seven-Game Home Winning Streak
Navy has won each of its last seven home games, dating back the final home series of the 2006 season. The seven-game home winning streak is the longest since the Mids put together an eight-game streak from March 25, 2000, to April 2, 2000. Navy’s last nine-game winning streak at home came during the 1995 season, while the previous 10-game streak came between the end of the 1993 and beginning of the 1994 campaigns. The Midshipmen pieced together an 11-game home winning streak from April 20, 1987, to March 29, 1988.

Looking Back at the 2007 Service Academy Spring Classic
The Midshipmen posted a 2-1 mark at this year’s Service Academy Spring Classic in Tennessee last weekend. Navy opened with a split doubleheader sweep of Air Force, 7-1 and 7-5, before falling to Missouri on Sunday, 5-0. The Midshipmen pitching staff did its part on the weekend, holding the opposition to a .172 (17-for-99) batting average. Junior Mitch Harris (Mt. Holly, N.C.) and freshman Jonathan Berkowitz (Parkland, Fla.) were named to the All-Service Academy Spring Classic Team. Holly picked up the win on the mound against Air Force and belted a double and a home run on the weekend. Berkowitz smacked a double and a triple, while driving in four runs to earn all-classic recognition.

Kosty Second Quickest to 40 Wins with Navy
With Navy’s 7-5 win over Air Force on the back end of last Friday’s doubleheader, second-year Navy head coach Paul Kostacopoulos became the second-fastest Navy skipper to get to 40 wins during his tenure with the Mids. Kostacopoulos’ 40th-career win with Navy came in his 63rd game at the helm for the Mids (40-22-1), only four games behind legendary head coach Joe Duff, who won his 40th game in his 59th contest on May 12, 1964 (40-19).

February Success Under Kosty
The Midshipmen have enjoyed significant success under head coach Paul Kostacopoulos in the month of February over his first-two seasons at the helm. Kostacopoulos and the Mids own a 17-4-1 (.795) mark in the month of February. With its 2-1 win over Georgetown on Wednesday, Navy broke the program record for wins in the month of February, set last season, with nine. The 2006 Mids posted an 8-2-1 record in the month of February to break the previous record of three February wins. Prior to Kostacopoulos, Navy owned an all-time record of 29-63-1 (.317) in the month of February.

Harris Among Top 10 in Career Strikeouts
With his eight-strikeout performance against Air Force last Friday, junior right-handed pitcher Mitch Harris (Mt. Holly, N.C.) moved into a tie for 10th on the program’s career strikeouts list with 159. He’s matched the total produced by David Lowe from 1988-90, needs only three to tie for eighth with Craig Gibson (1980-83) and Toby Moore (1993-95) and 11 to tie for seventh on the all-time list with Lou Repucci (1973-76).
Harris only needs 41 strikeouts for 200 during his career to become only the second pitcher in school history to reach the 200-strikeout mark during his junior year. Chuck Davis (1959-61), the program’s career strikeouts leader with 347, fanned 238 batters prior to his senior season.

Hollins Moving Up Stolen Base List
Junior center fielder Renaldo Hollins (Virginia Beach, Va.) moved into sole possession of eighth place on the career stolen bases list during the seventh inning of Tuesday’s game against Delaware State. His 35 career stolen bases are only two shy of tying Mike Schultz (1986-88) for seventh on the all-time list.

Second-Youngest Team in Patriot League
The 2007 Navy baseball team ranks as the second-youngest team in the Patriot League this season, highlighted by its 16 freshmen and only five seniors. Only Lehigh, last year’s league champion, welcomes more new faces this year, as nearly half (17-of-35) of its team is comprised of freshmen.

Freshmen Making Immediate Impact
With 16 freshmen on the 2007 roster, Navy is counting on its freshman class to make an immediate impact. Freshmen have accounted for more than 43 percent of the starting lineup this season, while a freshman has been on the mound in 33 percent of Navy’s action this year.

Home Games a Plenty in 2007
This weekend’s action at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium will mark the start of a 32-game home slate for the Midshipmen in 2007. Weather permitting, the 32 home games would break the school record of 28 home contests set last season.

Home Sweet Home
Since the 1946 season, Navy has posted a record of 740-280-15 (.722) at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium. This season, the Midshipmen are off to a 5-0 start on their home field.

Navy to Face William & Mary and Penn State This Weekend

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy gymnastics team heads back on the road this weekend when it travels to Williamsburg, Va., to take on William & Mary and Penn State on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.

The Midshipmen improved to 9-7 on the year last weekend with a 197.2-163.9 victory over James Madison in its final home meet of the season at Macdonough Hall.

Navy enters the weekend ranked 13th in the nation, while Penn State comes in as the second-best team in the country and William & Mary at 15th in the rankings.

Junior Christopher Tam (Draper, Utah) looks to lead Navy in several events in the all-around event on Saturday. The 13th-ranked gymnast in the country in the all-around tallied 48.9 points last week against James Madison, scoring an 8.0 or higher in five of the six disciplines. His highest score came on the high bar, where he earned an 8.6 from the judges. Tam ranks 20th nationally on the high bar with an average score of 8.983.

Sophomore Joseph Atzenbeck (Broomfield, Colo.) has registered a score of 8.0 or higher in his three events during two of the last-three meets. He scored an 8.75 on the high bar, an 8.3 on the pommel horse and an 8.3 on the parallel bars last Saturday in Annapolis. After starting the year on just the pommel horse and high bar, he added the parallel bars to his repertoire, where he’s scored above an 8.0 in each of his three tries in the event.

Junior Brandon Cook (Longmont, Colo.) recorded a season-best 8.95 in the floor exercise last week and has been at or above the 8.5 mark all season in the event. In addition to the floor exercise, Cook has scored higher than an 8.0 in all-five competitions on the vault.

Sophomore Adam Stanton (Centennial, Colo.) has proven to be a solid scorer on the pommel horse this season. In three of his last-four competitions, Stanton has registered an 8.0 or higher in the event.

Junior Rich Mehlmann (Bristol, R.I.) has served the Midshipmen quite well on the still rings, earning higher than an 8.4 in each of his last-three meets. Working his way back on the rings after an early-season injury is senior team captain Sean Blackman (Fayetteville, Ga.). Blackman has scored above an 8.0 in both meets since his return to the still rings.

Midshipmen Head to ECAC Championship This Weekend

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Following its second-place team score at the Patriot League Championship two weeks ago, the Navy women's track & field team will look to extend its indoor season this weekend with the ECAC Championship on Saturday and Sunday in Boston.

With this weekend serving as the final date for qualifying marks to the NCAA Championship, Navy is aiming for at least one of its members to qualify against a field of more than 50 teams this weekend in Boston.

Last year, the Midshipmen finished 19th out of 50 schools that scored with a total of 16 points.

Qualified in three events this weekend for the Mids is senior team captain Kirsten Andrews (New Holland, Pa.). Andrews will participate in the 60-meter hurdles, long jump and pole vault events, two of which she set school records during the Patriot League Championship two weeks ago.

Andrews broke the school record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.70 seconds during the prelims and owns the program’s three-fastest showings. She then soared 19’5-1/2” (5.93 meters) in the long jump to shatter the previous school record by five inches. In the pole vault, Andrews owns four of the top-five heights this season, clearing 12’3-1/2” (3.75 meters) on two occasions. Last year, Andrews earned All-East recognition for top-eight performances in both the 60-meter hurdles and pole vault.

Senior Loni Forsythe (Chattanooga, Tenn.) will partake in the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes this weekend, both events she owns the school-record time. She smashed the record in the 60-meter dash at Army one month ago with a 7.59-second clocking. She owns the six-best times in the event in program history. Two weeks ago at the Patriot League Championship, she broke the school record in the finals of the 200-meter dash with a 24.87-second showing. She became the first Navy runner in program history to finish the 200-meter race in less than 25.00 seconds.

Junior Vicki Moore (Burke, Va.) will look to win the 1,000-meter race after earning All-East honors with a second-place time at last year’s ECAC Championship. She has won the race both times she has competed in the event this year, with her season-best time of 2:56.19 coming at the league championship two weeks ago.

Junior Jacquelyn Charnigo (Medina, Ohio) owns the team’s top height in the pole vault this season and will look to surpass that mark this weekend. She soared over the 12’5-1/2” (3.80 meters) bar, a career-best clearance, at the Patriot Games on Jan. 27.

Wrapping up the Navy contingent at the ECAC Championship this weekend is the 4x800-meter relay team of Erin Demchko (Pearl River, N.Y.), Caitlin Rummel (Falmouth, Mass.), Stefanie Peskosky (Charlotte, N.C.) and Moore. The 4x800-meter relay unit qualified for this weekend’s action wit its 9:10.82 showing at the Patriot League Championship.

The official field for the 2007 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship will be announced early next week following this weekend's championships and last chance meets. The national championship will be held at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark., on March 9-10.

Road Trip for Navy Tennis Team Begins with Close Loss

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A three-day swing of matches in the state of North Carolina for the Navy tennis team began with a tough 4-3 loss to UNC Greensboro, Friday afternoon at the UNCG Tennis Courts.

"It was disappointing," said Navy head coach John Officer of the narrow setback. "We played very well in doubles to win the doubles point and were right there in singles with a chance to win the match. We just didn't get it done."

The Mids won two of the three doubles matches to earn the lone available doubles point. Highlighting the performance of the Navy doubles tandems was Jason Hill (So., Marietta, Ga.) and Nate Nelms (So., St. Mary's, Ga.) recording an 8-3 win over Andrey Bubnov and Arsel Kumdereli, the 48th-ranked doubles team in the country.

In singles, Navy picked up straight set wins at the Nos. 4 and 5 flights, while the Spartans posted straight set victories at Nos. 1, 2 and 6. That left the No. 3 singles match between Navy's Adrian Lai (Sr., Tucson, Ariz.) and UNC Greensboro's Arsel Kumdereli to decide the overall outcome.

Kumdereli won the opening set, 7-5, but then Lai posted a 6-3 win in the second set to even the match. Lai then took a 5-2 lead in the third set and served for the match up two breaks of serve. He would drop the next five games, however, allowing Kumdereli to escape with a 7-5 victory in the set and give the Spartans the victory.

"Adrian gave it his all and played his heart out," said Officer.

The loss drops Navy to 5-6 on the year, while UNC Greensboro improves to 4-5 with the victory.

Navy will remain in the state over the next two days for matches Saturday at No. 39 North Carolina State and Sunday at No. 17 North Carolina.

Navy Stands Second After First Day of EIWA Championship

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - The 17th-ranked Navy wrestling team opened the 103rd EIWA Championship in style on Friday at East Stroudsburg’s Koehler Fieldhouse, sending seven Midshipmen on to tomorrow’s action and ranking second in the team standings.

Cornell leads the way after the opening day with 112.5 points, while Navy comes in at second with 90.5 points. Navy’s point total after the first day already topped its total from its fifth-place team total of 86 points at last year’s EIWA Championship. The remaining top-five team scores belong to Penn (82 points), American (61.5 points) and Lehigh (61 points).

Among the seven qualifiers for Saturday’s action, Navy has four members that will compete in its weight class championship tomorrow. The four wrestlers competing for the Midshipmen are the second most among the championship field, only behind Cornell’s six wrestlers that have made their way to the finals.

After a first-round bye in the 157-pound weight class, second-seeded senior team captain John Jarred (Kansas City, Mo.) won both of his matches to take on top-seeded Matt Dragon from Penn. Jarred opened his day by pinning Brown’s Thomas Fazio with 1:29 remaining in the second period to move onto Lehigh’s David Nakasone. Jarred, who had defeated Nakasone earlier this year in the Navy-Lehigh dual meet, repeated his success with a 3-1 decision.

At 174 pounds, top-seeded Navy junior Matt Stolpinski (Westfield, Mass.) extended his winning streak to 13 matches on Friday with a trio of victories. Stolpinski began his day with a technical fall of Princeton’s John Clore after two periods to advance to Bucknell’s Shane Riccio. Stolpinski defeated Riccio by major decision or better for the third time this season, recording a 12-1 major decision victory. In the semifinal round against Penn’s Matthew Herrington, Stolpinski rolled to an 11-6 decision to qualify for tomorrow’s finals. With today’s three wins, he improved his record to 37-5 on the year, only one victory shy of tying for fifth on the all-time single-season list with Brett Bourne (1989-90), Greg Gingeleskie (1997-98) and Steve Kovach (2000-01).

Senior Antonio Miranda (Eugene, Ore.) defeated two higher-seeded foes on Friday to advance to tomorrow’s finals at 184 pounds. Miranda, the fifth seed, opened by posting a 23-10, major decision over Brown’s Matthew Gevelinger. He then took on fourth-seeded Lior Zamir from Penn and registered a 6-2 decision victory to move onto top-seed David Craig from Lehigh. In their first meeting between the two wrestlers this year on Friday, Miranda came up with an 8-5 upset victory to earn a spot in the finals. With the victories, Miranda reached the 30-win mark this season and enters Saturday with a 32-8 record.

Navy’s final qualifier for a weight class title comes from heavyweight junior Ed Prendergast (St. Louis, Mo.), who won each of his three bouts by decision. He kicked off his day with a 5-2 win over Charles Deighton of East Stroudsburg, then topped Bucknell’s Greg Hingson by a 7-4 margin. Prendergast concluded his evening with a narrow 3-2 decision over fifth seed Levon Mock from Brown. Prendergast has now won 16-consecutive bouts, spanning back to Jan. 6. His 34 victories in 2006-07 are tied for 16th on the single-season list with Mark Conley (2000-01) and John Cox (2005-06).

Three Midshipmen will compete on Saturday in the consolation bracket after one loss on Friday. Sophomore 133-pounder Joe Baker (Poway, Calif.) dropped a tough 7-5 sudden victory to Bucknell’s David Marble in the opening bout, but won his next-two matches to make it through to tomorrow. Baker bounced back with a 11-3 major decision win over Rutgers’ Dan Hilt before a 5-3 decision victory against East Stroudsburg’s John Stout.

Senior 149-pound wrestler John Cox (Grand Haven, Mich.) won his first-two matches before falling in the semifinal round. Cox posted a technical fall 34 seconds into the second period against Franklin & Marshall’s Stephen Gregory before the third seed defeated American’s Damian Swietlik by a 4-2 decision. However, Cox’s search for his 108th career victory would have to wait at least one day, as second-seeded JP O’Connor from Harvard defeated Cox, 9-3.

Navy’s final wrestler advancing to tomorrow is junior 197-pounder Matt Parsons (Dunkirk, Md.). He opened with a technical fall 4:44 into the match against Brown’s Larry Otsuka before falling to second-seeded Joshua Glenn of American by a 16-5 major decision. Parsons recouped to post a major decision win over Harvard’s William Colgan and a fall with 50 seconds left in the second period against Rutgers’ Lamar Brown.

The action at the 103rd EIWA Championship will conclude tomorrow, with the consolation semifinals and place matches kicking off the day at 11 a.m., before the championship finals commence at 4 p.m.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- American made 9-of-18 three-point attempts and held Navy to a 1-of-17 effort from behind the arc in a 68-55 victory over the Mids, Saturday afternoon at Alumni Hall in the quarterfinal round of the Patriot League Women's Basketball Tournament.

Navy, the No. 5 seed in the tournament, sees its 2006-07 season comes to a close with a 12-17 record, while American, the tournament's fourth seed, moves on to the semifinal round with a 12-18 record. The Eagles will face No. 8 Colgate Sunday at 1 p.m. in Alumni Hall. The Raiders topped No. 1 seed Bucknell 69-62 in Saturday's first game of the day.

The Eagles took a 38-33 advantage at halftime thanks to shooting 48 percent from the field and sinking 6-of-11 three-point attempts. Navy attempted 15 more shots from the field than American did, but shot just 35 percent from the field during the opening 20 minutes of play.

"American was very sharp offensively, especially early," said Navy head coach Tom Marryott. "They really dug us into a hole."

Navy scored the opening six points of the second half to take its first lead of the day at 39-38. American answered by scoring the next 10 points to begin an 18-4 run which gave the Eagles a 56-43 lead with 9:37 left on the clock.

"We did a nice job over the first few possessions of the second half, but then we couldn't stop them and that allowed their defense to set up against us. Their pressure really bothered us."

The Mids were able to close to within six points at both 57-51 and 61-55, American made 7-of-8 free throws to secure the victory.

In addition to holding a 9-1 advantage in three-pointers made, American also converted 19-of-27 free throw attempts, while Navy was 4-of-4 from the charity stripe on the day.

Betsy Burnett (Sr., New Oxford, Pa.) led Navy with 16 points and a career-high tying 10 rebounds, while Kate Hobbs (Sr., Wexford, Pa.) tallied 14 points and nine rebounds. Navy's other two seniors, Carly Meyer (Orlando, Fla.) and Margaret Knap (Chicago, Ill.), struggled from the field Saturday, shooting a combined 7-of-29 and totaling 15 points.

Nicole Ryan poured in 25 points and Liz Hayes scored 21 to lead American.

Navy Drops Pair to Central Connecticut State, 9-1 and 5-2

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy’s offense could muster only three runs on nine hits on Saturday afternoon as the Midshipmen were swept in a baseball doubleheader by Central Connecticut State at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium. Navy dropped the opener, 9-1, before falling in the nightcap, 5-2.

The Midshipmen, who have scored five runs over the last-four games, dropped to 9-4 on the year. The Blue Devils opened their 2007 season with a 2-0 mark.

“I have to tip my hat to a very good team in Central Connecticut State,” stated Navy head coach Paul Kostacopoulos. “They are very experienced with several juniors and seniors, and had two very good pitchers. You truly have credit where credit is due today. They controlled both games and out-played us.”

Kostacopoulos added, “We didn’t give ourselves a lot of opportunities to score and we really need to work at that. This definitely stands out early in this young season.”

In the opener, junior right-handed pitcher Mitch Harris (Mt. Holly, N.C.) was tagged for his first loss of the season. He allowed five runs on eight hits over six innings with only one walk and matched his season-high strikeout total with nine. He fell to 3-1 on the year.

Harris was able to work his way out of a bases loaded, nobody out jam in the second without yielding a run, as he struck out the first batter and induced an inning-ending double play.

There was no score until the fourth inning, when the Blue Devils put up four runs, capped by a Dave Lorber two-run double off the fence in left-center.

Navy would answer back with a run in the fifth, as junior Bill Maugeri (Edgewater, Md.) singled up the middle to score freshman Steven Soares (Coral Springs, Fla.) and pull the Mids within three at 4-1. However, that is as close as Navy would get, as Central Connecticut State tacked on insurance runs in the sixth and seventh to close out the game.

Ken Kerski got the win for the visitors in the opener, as he scattered four hits and three walks with four strikeouts in a complete-game effort.

Navy dug itself a 5-0 hole after four innings in the nightcap before making a late rally attempt.

The Midshipmen cut into the deficit with a pair of runs in the sixth inning to make the score 5-2. Senior B.J. Bickel (Benson, N.C.) singled and came home to score on a Harris sacrifice fly. One batter later, sophomore Joshua Martinez (Denver, Colo.) laced a RBI-single up the middle to score junior Renaldo Hollins (Virginia Beach, Va.), who reached on an error during a sacrifice bunt. Following a hit by pitch to load the bases, Central Connecticut State starter Evan Scribner was able to get out of any further damage with a groundout.

Navy sophomore starter Matt White (Yorba Linda, Calif.) was credited with the loss in game two, as he gave up seven hits and five runs, four of which were earned, in 3.2 innings. The Midshipmen bullpen of Kevin Heasley (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Yale Eckert (La Selva Beach, Calif.) kept the opposition in check while giving Navy an opportunity a chance for a comeback. The two pitchers combined for 3.1 innings of two-hit, shutout relief with one walk and three strikeouts.

“I thought the bullpen did a great job in the second game,” said Kostacopoulos. “Kevin did a solid job in his first game of the year and we really liked what Yale did as a freshman making his first appearance of his career. They kept us in the game when we had a chance in the sixth and held a very good offensive team at bay.”

Bickel was the lone Navy hitter to record a multi-hit performance on Saturday, going 2-for-3 at the plate in the nightcap.

Scribner earned the win for the Blue Devils, as he allowed only two unearned runs on five hits with no walks and seven strikeouts in working a complete game. Scribner needed only 80 pitches to get through the Navy lineup on Saturday.

The Midshipmen and the Blue Devils will close out the three-game series tomorrow with a 12 noon first pitch at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium. Live stats will be available via GameTracker on www.navysports.com(.)

Navy Rifle Victorious at MAC Championships

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy rifle team fired a strong score in air rifle, which propelled it to a 35-point win over Akron in the MAC Championships. The Mids will finish with a 9-4 dual-meet record following the victory.

"I thought we had a good day in air rifle, but we struggled somewhat in smallbore," said Navy coach Bill Kelley. "Overall, it was a good day for us and good to get a win in the MAC Championships. This was a good tune-up for the NCAA Championships and we hope we can put on a good show next weekend."

Josh Albright claimed medalist honors in both disciplines, leading Navy to the win. The Mids shot a 2337 in air rifle, led by Albright's 580. Chris Schneider shot a 576, Sarah Bergman followed with a 565 and Alex Karacsonyi shot a 580.

Navy then fired a 2337 in air rifle, led by Albright's 590. Sophomore Lisa Kunzelman added a 588, Bergman tallied a 581 score and Karacsonyi rounded out Navy's contingent with a 578.

Navy will compete in next weekend's NCAA Championships, which begins Friday in Fairbanks, Alaska. The championships appearance is Navy's 16th straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Tam combined for 47.75 points over the six disciplines, with his performances on the high bar, still rings and floor exercise highlighting his day.
Midshipmen Finish First Day of IC4A Championship

BOSTON – Navy men’s track & field junior Craig Meekins (Baldwin, N.Y.) qualified for the finals of the 800-meter run as the Midshipmen competed in the opening day of the IC4A Championship at Boston University on Saturday.

The Midshipmen did not earn a point on Saturday, as many of the events were in the preliminary round and several other events and all event finals are slated for Sunday.

Meekins raced to a third-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:51.48, matching his season-best mark at the Iowa State Classic less than a month ago. The showing on Saturday ties him for seventh-fastest mark in school history and he now owns four of the program’s ten-best times in the event. His clocking was 0.48-second off the first-place time run by Seton Hall’s Rob Novak.

Senior team captain Cameron Lindsay (Kernersville, N.C.) narrowly missed qualification for Sunday’s finals in the 500-meter run despite a career-best time. He crossed the finish line with a 1:03.91 showing for 12th place, only 0.39-second away from the final-qualifying time.

Junior Lucas Burke (Bakersfield, Calif.) ran the 1,000-meter run in 2:28.08 to finish in 12th-place. Sophomore Andrew Grant (Athens, Ga.) placed 26th in the mile run with a 8:45.94 clocking and junior Ron Belany (Haiku, Hawai’i) landed 16th in the long jump with a distance of 21’10-3/4” (6.67 meters).

In addition to the IC4A Championship, Navy sent its distance medley relay team to the Alex Wilson Invitational on Friday in Notre Dame, Ind. The unit of juniors Paul Harris (Woodbury, Minn.), Jeff Sarchione (Alliance, Ohio), William Ricks (Sussex, Va.) and Ben Kozy (Houston, Texas) combined for a time of 21st-place time of 9:50.86.

The Midshipmen will close out the IC4A Championship tomorrow with competitors seeing action in the 800-meter run, high jump, triple jump and shot put.

Navy Pair to Square Off in Finals of CSA Individual Championship

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Navy's Jeff Sawin (Haverford, Pa.) and Nils Mattsson (Spring House, Pa.) won a pair of matches Saturday to set up an all Navy title fight in the Molloy Division of the 2007 College Squash Association Individual Championship. The former Lawrenceville School teammates will battle for the individual title on Sunday beginning at 11:30 am on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.

After winning a pair of preliminary matches, Sawin, Mattsson and sophomore Alastair Smith (Hillsborough, N.J.) had the opportunity to become head coach Craig Dawson's first players to win their first three matches of the CSA Individual Championship and advance to the semifinals. Each shared in the feat, as Sawin claimed a 9-7, 6-9, 9-4, 9-5 win over Dartmouth's Edward Newhouse, Mattsson beat fifth-seeded Adam King from Dartmouth, 2-9, 9-4, 9-0, 9-7 and Smith cruised past Yale's Bill Hatch in three. Smith's victory over Hatch was impressive considering Hatch knocked off top-seeded Verdi J DiSesa from Harvard in the round of 16 on Friday evening in four games.

With Navy players earning three of the four semifinal spots, it set up an elimination match between the Mids' Smith and Mattsson. In what proved to be a hard-fought match between teammates, fourth-seeded Mattsson prevailed in three, edging Smith, 10-9, 9-0, 9-6. Sawin, meanwhile, got the best of second-seeded Rohit Gupta from Cornell, 9-2, 9-2, 3-9, 9-3, and earned his way into the championship match against Mattsson. Sawin enters Sunday's championship bout with a 28-3 record, while Mattsson has turned in a 24-9 mark in his rookie campaign.

"It really doesn't get any better than this," said an elated Dawson. "I'm proud of how all three of these young men have played throughout the season and in particular the last two days."
