"There are no easy games here. Eastern Michigan has lost a bunch of games by a touchdown or less and I doubt we have any players that Duke recruited. Army is definitely much better," Johnson said. "If you want my honest opinion, we're not very good anywhere. We have to make improvement across the board if we want to achieve the goals the players set."

If Navy isn't good anywhere, why is the team rank #1 in rushing? ...unless Johnson means post Brian Hampton.

*A blue-ribbon panel will determine the winner from all of the nominees *

DALLAS (FWAA) - Navy slotback Eddie Martin is this week's nominee for the FedEx Orange Bowl-FWAA Courage Award to be announced at the end of the 2006 season.

Martin, a senior from Cantonment, Fla., was diagnosed with cancer in August. He passed the team's preseason shuttle run and other conditioning tests, but was troubled by stomach pain and sleeplessness. A medical evaluation revealed Martin has lymphoma; he began undergoing chemotherapy immediately.

"You just kind of go numb when you hear something like that," Navy coach Paul Johnson said. "You don't think something like that can happen to these young guys."

Martin had played in every game in the 2005 season, but isn't playing this year. The Midshipmen are wearing his No. 32 on their helmets. Martin leads the team out before every home game, carrying the American flag.

For the first time, the FWAA and the FedEx Orange Bowl will announce a weekly nominee each Wednesday during the season. A blue-ribbon panel will determine the winner from all of the nominees. The winner of the FedEx Orange Bowl-FWAA Courage Award will be announced in December and be presented with the trophy.

The Courage Award was created by ESPN The Magazine's senior writer Gene Wojciechowski, also a FWAA member. A select group of writers from the FWAA vote on the winner each year. The requirements for nomination include displaying courage, on or off the field, including overcoming an injury or physical handicap, preventing a disaster or living through hardship.

Previous winners of the FWAA's Courage Award are the Tulane football team (2005), Memphis' Haracio Colen (2004), San Jose State's Neil Parry (2003) and Toledo's William Bratton (2002).

The Orange Bowl Committee is a not-for- profit, 329-member, all-volunteer organization that exists as a self-sustaining, independent organization supporting and producing activities and events which enhance the image, economy, and culture of South Florida. Among the OBC core events are the Orange Bowl Festival, FedEx Orange Bowl and World-Class Halftime Show, the MetroPCS Orange Bowl Basketball Classic, the Orange Bowl PATCH Beach Bash, the Budweiser Orange Bowl Tailgate Party, Boston Market Orange Bowl Youth Football Championships, Orange Bowl Cheer & Dance Championships, Orange Bowl Swim Classic, Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships and Orange Bowl Sailing Regatta Series.

The Football Writers Association of America, a non-profit organization founded in 1941, consists of more than 900 men and women across North America who cover college football for a living. The membership includes journalists, broadcasters and publicists, as well as key executives in all the areas that involve the game. The FWAA works to govern areas that include game day operations, major awards, a national poll and its annual All-America team.

2006 FedEx Orange Bowl Courage Award Nominees • Sept. 20: Ray Ray McElrathbey, Clemson • Sept. 27: Martel Van Zant, Oklahoma State • Oct. 4: Terry Hoeppner, Indiana • Oct. 11: Dan Howell, Washington • Oct. 18: Eddie Martin, Navy

If courage is what they are looking for, he wins my vote, and my prayers too.

Notre Dame holds the NCAA record with 42 consecutive victories over Navy in the longest continuous intersectional rivalry in the country. Of course, the Mids' last win in the series came way back in 1963 when Heisman Trophy winner Roger Staubach was the quarterback.

"I couldn't imagine anything better than beating Notre Dame. It would mean the world to me," said Rossi, the team's starting center. "We've done a lot of good things since we've been here, but nobody has done that in a long, long time. That's something you would tell your grandkids about."

Gladchuk, who runs a department that includes 31 sports, said the deal between the schools is driven by a "million-dollar swap" agreement. Each year, the host school gives the visitor a guarantee of $1 million and keeps the rest of the proceeds from ticket sales and television revenue. This year's game figures to generate nearly $4.5 million in ticket sales and $1.5 million in television rights.

The Midshipmen rely on finesse, precision and the option game to beat teams. Most college football programs have abandoned that style of play for a game that relies on hulking lineman and pro-style offenses. Navy has no choice. The big recruits go to the big-name schools.

They've been fairly successful at playing small, going 26-11 over the last three years.

In 2003, Navy almost did the unthinkable and beat the Irish. But a 40-yard field goal by D.J. Fitzpatrick with time expiring gave Notre Dame a 27-24 victory.

By all appearances, Kaheaku-Enhada isn't getting too worked up about making his first career start against 11th-ranked Notre Dame on national television. The quiet, reserved sophomore has deftly answered a barrage of questions from the media and seems unfazed by the task at hand.

"I feel confident and ready to go. The team is counting on me so I need to go out and perform," Kaheaku-Enhada said.

Navy head coach Paul Johnson has no desire to discuss the coaching vacancy at North Carolina, for which he is a reported candidate....

Navy athletic director Chet Gladchuk has increased Johnson's total compensation package several times since he was originally hired in December, 2001. Reliable sources told The Capital last year that Johnson had a deal worth in excess of $1 million and a six-year contract that contains an annual rollover clause.

$1 million per year seems to be the standard compensation package for top football coached these days. Top college presidents earn approximately $500K per year.

When Navy coach Paul Johnson gathered his players for their daily post-practice chat one day last week, he was actually smiling.

He told the Midshipmen they had a great opportunity when No. 11 Notre Dame rolls into Baltimore to face Navy tomorrow at M&T Bank Stadium. Johnson said no one outside that huddle gave them any chance of staying with the Fighting Irish, and that brought a smile to his face....
